Sam, or Samhain, is the brainchild of film director/writer Michael Dougherty, appearing as the main protagonist in Dougherty's 1996 short film Season's Greetings and main protagonists of the 2007 horror comedy anthology film Trick 'r Treat.
Season's Greetings
Sam is first seen walking down a street, and then approaches a house, he rings the bell and asks for candy but no one responds. Disappointed, he walks to an alley and finds a man there. Later Sam gets out with his candy bag filled before smiling evilly to the audience.
Trick 'r Treat
Sam appears as a minor character in the first three stories and the titular main antagonist in the fourth and final story.
The Principal
When Principal Steven Wilkins is burying a body in his backyard, an unknown attacker is seen ambushing Wilkins' elderly neighbor, Mr. Kreeg, but Wilkins ignores Kreeg's help cry and returns to his house. And when Wilkins hands out candy to Macy and her friends, Sam appears behind Chip, Wilkins offers Sam candy, and he just takes a chocolate bar and walks away from the house.
The Bus Driver
Sam is briefly seen in the flashback of the story, where he has apparently killed a crow with a branch. In the present, after Rhonda leaves her friends to be killed by the school bus kids, who are brought back to life as zombies, she and Sam encounter each other, where Rhonda seemingly recognizes Sam before parting ways. Surprise Party
After Laurie and a group of women turn into werewolves to kill Wilkins, who was disguised as a vampire and killing people, Sam is seen sitting on a log, watching them murdering Wilkins.
Sam
Sam finally appears as the titular main antagonist of the final story, when Mr. Kreeg scares some trick or treating kids, he unknowingly breaks a rule from Halloween, drawing Sam's attention, when Mr. Kreeg checks his lawn after a candy is tossed in the window, he sees it filled with jack-o'-lanterns and a note with a message written in blood saying that Kreeg will be killed, Sam then rushes in the upstairs hallway to Kreeg's room, when Kreeg checks his room, a Jack-O Lantern is suddenly lit on fire, and Kreeg's room is filled in writings like "Trick or Treat" and "Give me something good to eat". Sam then suddenly stabs Kreeg's leg and emerges from the other side of the bed, Kreeg asks him who is he, and to his shock, Sam pulls a chocolate bar with a razor blade in it, Kreeg grabs his shotgun to shoot Sam, but he disappears from the room. Kreeg then walks out of his room and slips in the staircase filled with candy and glass shards, injuring his hands in the process, Kreeg tries to unlock the front door and escape but he is unable to do so due to his slit hands, while doing it, Sam sneaks up to him by crawling in the ceiling and lunges towards Kreeg, briefly getting knocked out.
Kreeg tries to get help from Wilkins before being attacked again by Sam (the unknown attacker from the first story) in the process. Kreeg accidentally rips Sam's mask off, revealing his hideous, pumpkin-like face. Sam then bites Kreeg's leg but gets shot in the face by him, temporarily incapacitating Sam. Kreeg then shoots Sam's inert body, and then tries to call the police, but the phone cord is cut, and Sam's sentient right hand stabs Kreeg in the ankle, but he kicks it away, the hand walks to Sam's body, waking him up and reattaching his hand back in place, much to Kreeg's horror. Sam puts his mask back on and slowly, yet menacingly walks towards Kreeg, biting a pumpkin lollipop. A terrified Kreeg tries to fight back by using a broken bottle, but Sam effortlessly breaks his arm, and apparently stabs Kreeg's chest with the bitten lollipop. Fortunately for Kreeg, a chocolate bar fell on Kreeg's chest and Sam unknowingly poked it, Sam sees the bar and eats it. Greatly satisfied, Sam watches at Kreeg one last time before walking out of the house. Sam is last seen glaring at Kreeg from the street before watching a woman named Emma blowing out a Jack-O Lantern, (just like she did in the opening scene) and Sam then goes off to kill her (revealing he was the one who killed her in the opening).
Appearance
Sam appears as a seemingly innocent young trick-or-treater, dressed in orange footy pajamas with yellow patches sewn on the front and tattered brown gloves. His large, round head is covered by a simple burlap mask tied around his neck, with black button eyes and a stitched-on grin. Once his mask is removed, however, it reveals his demonic nature- his bald, bulbous head is covered with sickly orange flesh, and has a wide mouth full of sharp and crooked teeth. Combined with his black, angular eye sockets and a triangular hole where his nose would be, Sam's head resembles a traditional jack-o'-lantern. He also carries around a large burlap sack full of candy, razor blades, and possibly a live cat. When shot and dismembered, Sam's insides are shown to be made of pumpkin guts.
Personality
Sam is the spirit of Halloween night, symbolizing both its innocent whimsy and underlying darkness. He appears in a different town every year on Halloween night, ensuring that the Halloween spirit is kept alive and punishing those who would ignore or defy the ancient traditions, often in a sadistic and ironic fashion tailored specifically to his targets. His weapons of choice are a large jack-o'-lantern lollipop (bitten into to create a shiv) and later on in the film, a chocolate bar with a razor blade sticking out. Even unarmed, Sam resorts to clawing and biting his victims.
Despite his sadistic and amoral nature, Sam is shown to give mercy to those who change their ways and respect Halloween- just before he stabs Mr. Kreeg, he is placated by a chocolate bar Kreeg uses to block his attack and leaves the house, believing this counted as trick or treating. Later, Kreeg is shown giving out candy to kids he once scorned as Sam watches from a distance as if to warn him that Sam will be watching.
Unfortunately for Kreeg, despite Sam sparing him, he is still found and killed by the zombies of the troubled kids Kreeg killed on the bus.
