Spangler is a strict and unyielding man, even after retiring from the military. He demanded much from the cadets at Marlin Academy and was obsessed with maintaining order and discipline among the cadets. Spangler is willing to drive the cadets relentlessly if he saw fit to
He is a man obsessed with control, discipline, and order; a part of him worships, in a sadistic way, the breaking of rebellious cadet spirits.
This attitude stems from his complicated childhood, being abandoned by his mother to be raised by a wet nurse, and then raised by his stepfather until adolescence until he ran away from home and enlisted in the army

Something else to highlight about his personality is how difficult it is to find his softer side, or at least his softer side; it seems that he only loves his dog and no one else.
He doesn't trust anyone except his pet, even though that dog often makes him angry with its behavior

From birth, Edwin's life was a disaster; his mother abandoned him in his early years and left him in the care of a wet nurse,He would later be taken in again by his mother and now a stepfather who, although he wasn't in his life for long, inspired him to take a military path,years later he received an officer's commission in an unspecified U.S. military branch at an unknown date many decades in the past and went on to serve in the military for more than twenty years. He rose to become a four-star general before his retirement. Sometime after retiring from the military, Spangler was hired by the Marlin Academy in Alabama to serve as its commandant
Unfortunately, he would never be useful in combat; worse, he would be more of a teacher than a fighter.
Even with his now relatively good life, he still falls into the vices of alcohol and nighttime nightmares.

Edwin is a tall mann, Caucasian, gray-haired man with the beginning of baldness on top (although that doesn't bother him),
He suffers from dozens of injuries and is missing his right eye, his left hand (replaced it with a hook with which he can perform some tasks, like smoking, carrying a pencil, etc.), his right ring finger, and is permanently paralyzed in his right leg. Ironically, none of these injuries are combat-related, as he has never served in wartime
Despite being 47 years old (he looks older), he is still physically active despite his limitations.
