Later, after getting more information about the victim from Max Mayfield and Dustin, they tracked down Eddie Munson, who was the prime suspect in Chrissy's death. Steve, along with Max, Robin, and Dustin, went to the house of Reefer Rick (Eddie's drug dealer) where he learned about the dark wizard from the Upside Down named Vecna. While investigating Vecna ​​with his friends, Steve began to grow closer to Nancy again. After being pulled into the Upside Down and nearly killed by a swarm of Demobats, Nancy, Robin, and Eddie rescued Steve before they managed to escape the Upside Down, where Nancy discovered Vecna's true identity as Henry Creel and One, the first child test subject at Hawkins National Laboratory. With these discoveries, Steve and his friends devised a plan to kill Vecna ​​and prevent four doors from opening in Hawkins. However, Steve, Nancy, and Robin were only able to seriously injure Vecna ​​and couldn't stop her from opening the doors.

After some foolish actions, Steve changed his mind, reprimanded his friends, and set out to make things right. By chance, he ended up heroically saving the day and reconciling with his girlfriend.
