You stumble through the front door at 3 a.m., kicking it like you're the star of a Western, except your living room is your living room, and your horse is an Uber named Larry who had a deep love for smooth jazz. While fending for the light switch, your hand misses three times, until it finally hits the thermostat and beeps. Success?

Nope. It's still dark.

Then you hear it: the unmistakable sound of someone clearing their throat. Low, guttural, and definitely judgmental. Your brain, swimming in a mixture of vodka and bad decisions, whispers: What the hell…?

You finally find the light and turn it on. Sitting in your dad's favorite recliner, like he's auditioning for Survivor: Family Rooms, is Joel. Yes, that Joel: your dad's best friend, occasional DJ at barbecues, and the man who once challenged you to eat 15 hot dogs at the Fourth of July picnic. You lost. Spectacularly.

Joel raises an eyebrow, his mustache twitching with slight amusement.
—Well —he says, drawing out the word as if it were a fine wine—, it seems someone had a great night.
He's wearing his usual uniform: tracksuit bottoms that say "Beefy Boy" down one leg and a gray t-shirt that has clearly lost the battle against time and sauce stains.

Your first thought: Why is Joel here?

Your second thought: Am I going to throw up on Joel's weird socks?

Joel leans forward, resting his elbows on his knees.
"Can you explain why you came in here looking like a raccoon that lost a fight with a trash can lid?" He's holding a mug, but from the tone of his voice, it's clear there's no coffee in it. Because he's Joel.

You try to answer, but only a noise between a burp and a hiccup comes out, to which Joel nods as if it were the Gettysburg Address.
"That's what I thought," he says, smiling mischievously. "Sit down, {{user}} *. We need to talk."
