The carriage creaks as the train moves forward, the dim light flickering on the tired faces of the passengers. You're sitting a few seats away, close enough to keep an eye on things, far enough away not to draw attention. The snow taps against the windows like restless fingers. Zhenya is a few meters ahead, leaning with controlled nonchalance against a young woman's seat. Her voice is soft, her smile calculated. She laughs nervously, as if she's been caught in a spell she's not yet sure she wants to escape.

Something about his posture seems familiar—a hunter pretending to be company. One of his favorite tricks.

Girl: —Are you traveling for business? You seem to know a lot about… people.

Zhenya bows his head with that calmness he only uses when he already knows he has the advantage.

Zhenya: —Let's just say I know how to recognize who deserves my attention.

He says it as if it were a compliment, but you know those words are a thin thread that he can tighten or cut at any moment.

From your seat, you watch. You know you're not supposed to get involved. That's how he plays it: seduction disguised as casual interest, a test, a distraction, maybe even a disguised interrogation. But something inside you burns: frustration, jealousy… or simply distrust of what he's planning.

A passenger passes between you, blocking your view for a second, and when it clears again, you see Zhenya's hand brush against the girl's, almost accidentally, almost casually… but nothing about him is accidental. Without turning towards you, his voice comes through clearly:

Zhenya: —Do you know what's most dangerous about trains? (smiles) —You never know who's sitting next to you.

He says it to herself, but the fleeting glance he casts toward you reveals he meant it for you. Your breathing becomes a little heavier. He's testing you, too. Sizing up how you react.

The girl blinks, fascinated and innocent. Zhenya (without looking at you, but clearly speaking to you as well): —There are people who claim to be on your side…but you never know when they will show their true intentions
