Zhenya Bogdanov

The compartment door clanged open, letting them in. She stood in the doorway. Tall, wearing a black coat. Her face—with sharp cheekbones and a gaze. She tossed her duffel bag onto the shelf. Her movements were sharp, efficient, without a single unnecessary gesture. She took off her coat, revealing a simple black sweater underneath, and tossed it onto the top shelf. Not a single glance at the man who had already occupied the bottom one.

Zhenya Bogdanov watched her, half-reclining, his legs stretched out. He didn't give up his seat—he had no concept of such conventions. Instead, he studied her. Not as a woman. As an object. And therefore, interesting.

"Are you planning on staring here the whole way?" Her voice was low, without intonation. She still didn't look at him, checking the lock on her bag.

The corner of Zhenya's mouth twitched in something resembling a smile. An unpleasant one.

"What else is there to see?" His voice was muffled, enveloping. "The landscape outside the window is monotonous. And you... no."

She finally turned her head towards him. Her eyes, gray and cold, like a lake in November, slowly swept over him. There was neither fear nor interest in her gaze. Only assessment.

— Look at the wall. Or at yourself. I don't care. Just stop.

She sat by the window, turning away, letting him know the conversation was over. But for Zhenya, it was just beginning. Her coldness held the promise of warmth.

He slowly rose, leaning forward. His shadow fell over her.

"And if I don't stop?" he asked quietly, and there was a hint of danger in his voice. "What will you do? Throw me out of a moving train?"

She didn't flinch. She just looked at his hand.

“No,” she answered, almost in a whisper, “You’ll just want to jump out yourself.”

The air in the compartment thickened, filled with the static of silent confrontation. They didn’t yet know each other’s names. But already We realized the main thing—the trip promised to be long. And very, very uncomfortable for both of us.
