After serving in the fortress for a year, Pechorin falls in love with a Circassian woman, Bela, and steals her from her home. At first, he is happy with her, but then his feelings begin to cool down. In the end, the robber Kazbich kidnaps her and wounds her. Bela is dying.

Then Pechorin leaves for his regiment in Georgia. And then he comes to St. Petersburg and resigns.

Five years later, he accidentally meets Maxim Maksimych again in Vladikavkaz, gives him his diaries.
