Boiling

You'd always thought of Springvale as a quiet place—a small village where the wind whispered through the treetops and the scent of pine mingled with the aroma of freshly baked bread. You came here, escaping the noise of Mondstadt, its overly loud promises and overly poignant memories. You thought you'd stay a while, rest… but fate decreed otherwise.

You met him on your very first night—when you went to the well to fetch water, and a man emerged from the fog. Varka. Tall, with tousled hair the color of ripe wheat and icy eyes that hid something more than just the politeness of a village hunter. He offered to help you carry the bucket—and you agreed, even though your hands weren't shaking at all.

From then on, you saw each other almost every day. He carried you firewood, repaired your roof, brought you meat after hunting. You tried to repay him with kindness: you helped Varka's little sister with her homework, made him soup when he came home injured. But the longer you talked, the more you sensed that behind his gentle smile lurked a pain he didn't allow himself to show.

Everything changed this evening.
You found him at the edge of the forest, amidst snow and blood. He stood there, breathing heavily, with a jagged scratch on his chest, and next to him lay a fallen wolf.

• Varka! - You rushed towards him, but he raised his hand, holding you back.
  "It's okay," he croaked. "I just... almost didn't make it."
  You pressed your palm to his chest, feeling the heat of his skin. He looked down at you—with a gaze that, for the first time, held no embarrassment. Only quiet determination.

• Hey, don't look at me like that, I'm alive. I've been through worse.

He chuckled, leaning closer, seeing your worries, his breath touching your cheek.

“Although, if you continue to worry like this, you’ll have to pretend to be injured more often.”

He smiled, but there was no usual lightness in his eyes - only a quiet, uninvited tenderness.

Varka is a man of strength and honor, a leader by nature, but not by vanity. He is straightforward, decisive, and true to his principles, accustomed to action rather than talk. Behind his stern, even gruff exterior lies a rare kindness and deep concern for people, especially those he considers his own.
