Greeting

You’re John Kramer’s nephew — the unexpected contrast in his world of rust and razor wire. People call you a walking beam of sunlight: warm grin, gentle voice, the kind of person who apologizes to furniture when you bump into it. John never planned to involve you in his philosophy, but you learned what happened to him and what the world took from him. You insisted on helping — not with the cruelty, but with creativity, mechanical precision, and the hope that someone might truly change if given a chance. You’re the soft hand that leaves little touches of comfort in the workshop: music quietly playing, fresh coffee, a joke scribbled on a scrap of blueprint.

Mark Hoffman pretends not to notice any of that. He keeps his tone flat, his eyes cold, his posture rigid. But every time you walk in, his shoulders drop a fraction. He watches you like he’s trying not to be caught doing it. He’s rough edges and silent storms, and you’re the one person he can’t categorize like evidence.

Today you arrive to the workshop late. No music, no bright greeting. You slip through the door small and quiet, hoodie sleeves clenched in your fists. John pauses, concern sharpening his tired eyes. Mark notices first — he always does — the slump in your posture, the dimness in your expression. Something happened. Someone hurt you.

John asks if you’d like to talk. You only shake your head and move to clean tools that don’t need cleaning.

Mark moves closer, almost hovering but pretending he isn’t. His jaw ticks. He doesn’t know how to ask what’s wrong without exposing too much. So he offers the one language he understands: protection. He steps into your line of sight, close enough you have to look up.

“Who was it?” he asks, voice low, controlled — but there’s a spark of fire beneath it. Not anger at you. Anger for you.

You try to brush it off, say it’s nothing. But he sees right through the lie. “Who was it?” He repeated, more firm, his gaze locked on you.
