the hornsent
Messmer, a demigod, led a brutal crusade against the Hornsent, a people in the Land of Shadow, who were purged by his fire and impalement of victims, earning him the "Impaler" title. The Hornsent now seek vengeance, and a surviving Hornsent can be summoned to fight alongside the player during the Messmer boss battle.
Messmer the Impaler and his actions
The Crusade: Messmer was tasked by his mother, Marika, to purge the Hornsent from the Land of Shadow.
Brutality: During the crusade, he impaled many of his victims, including the Hornsent's Divine Beasts, with his spears before burning them, which led to his moniker "the Impaler".
Conflict with the Tarnished: As a boss in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, Messmer fights the Tarnished out of a lingering loyalty to Marika. However, after realizing he has been abandoned, he reveals a new, powerful form.
Connection to the Hornsent: The player can eventually summon a surviving Hornsent to assist in the fight against Messmer after completing certain objectives, such as exhausting their dialogue.
The Hornsent and their motivations
Background: The Hornsent are a race who lived in the Land of Shadow and were persecuted by Messmer.
Betrayal: They believe they were betrayed by Marika and are seeking revenge against Messmer and those who wronged them.
The summon: A Hornsent NPC can be summoned to help with the Messmer fight after you've completed specific steps, which can significantly aid in the battle.
curse
Messmer the Impaler's curse is a malevolent serpent called the Abyssal Serpent, which was coiled inside him at birth, threatening to consume him from within. Queen Marika intervened by removing his right eye and replacing it with a seal of her Grace to contain the serpent. This curse also manifested as a vision of fire and the need for his constant companions, two winged snakes, to help suppress the serpent's influence.

Square Table Gaming YouTube · Jun 29, 2024 Details of the curse The Abyssal Serpent: A powerful and malicious serpent that was sealed within Messmer at birth, as described in this YouTube video and Fandom. Marika's intervention: To contain the serpent, Marika removed Messmer's right eye and replaced it with a seal of her Grace, as described in this YouTube video and this Fandom article. The curse's manifestations: The curse has several manifestations: A violent vision of fire that he despises. The presence of two winged serpents who are his constant companions and help suppress the Abyssal Serpent. A need to be exiled to the Shadow Realm to be kept secret from the world. Connection to other beings: The Abyssal Serpent is thought to be the result of an outer god, similar to how the Scarlet Rot is a byproduct of an outer god. The serpent's presence is also linked to Messmer's flame, explaining his desire to be rid of it. Marika's motivation: Marika likely banished Messmer to the Shadow Realm and suppressed his existence because she feared the Abyssal Serpent's power and potential threat to the Golden Order.

Exile: After fulfilling his mother's cruel mission, Messmer was banished from the Lands Between and left to his own devices in the Land of Shadow, continuing his war for over a thousand years.
Destiny: His actions were dictated by Marika, and he was eventually forced to take the blame for his own deeds, becoming a scapegoat for her terrible plans.

Messmer disowning Marika after finally realizing that she had abandoned him, and also his last words. Mother... Marika... A curse..upon thee...
Messmer the Impaler is the secondary antagonist of Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. He is the son of Queen Marika, who used him to wage wars on those that opposed her and the Golden Order, before being casted out into the Land of Shadow once he had served his purpose.
He is voiced by Jack Barton.
Personality In the past, Messmer was once a loyal follower and warlord under Marika's rule, and waged an endless purge against the impure and those without the grace of gold, which led to brutal outcomes and bloodshed. However this was deliberately done so that Marika would use him as a scapegoat so he would take the blame for her actions, leading him to becoming a detested figure by the inhabitants of the Realm of Shadow, most notably the Hornsent.
family bio
Messmer was born during the Second Liurnian War as a son of Marika the Eternal and an unknown father (possibly Radagon, due to his red hair). Like his other siblings, Malenia and Miquella, he was afflicted with a curse at birth, in which a dark and malevolent serpent called the Abyssal Serpent, writhed within his body, threatening to eat him from the inside. Out of fear of it being released, Marika sealed it away within her son's body by plucking Messmer's eye out and replacing it with a seal of grace.
Years later, Messmer was banished to the Land of Shadow after Marika decided to have him wage war on the Hornsent and those deemed impure, as they do not bear the light of grace nor the grace of gold. As he waged a destructive war unseen by those in the Lands Between, Messmer burned anything in his path through his army and his magical flame. In addition, he would impale many of his victims on pikes, earning him the cognomen, "The Impaler".
Eventually, a group of individuals would come to the Land of Shadow with the goal of finding and Rescuing the Demigod Miquella. Among this group is the Tarnished, who would eventually meet Messmer after battling their way through his forces. Although Messmer holds no ill will against the Tarnished, he nonetheless chooses to fight them out of what little loyalty to Marika he still had.
As the fight continues, Realizing the Tarnished strength, as well as seemingly understanding that Marika has abandoned him completely, Messmer removed the seal of grace that served as his eye, unleashing the Abyssal Serpent. Even with this new power, the Tarnished manged to slay Messmer, who with his last breath bitterly curses Markia. The Tarnished would then use Messmer Flame to clear a path forward on their quest to confront Miquella.
personality
In the past, Messmer was once a loyal follower and warlord under Marika's rule, and waged an endless purge against the impure and those without the grace of gold, which led to brutal outcomes and bloodshed. However this was deliberately done so that Marika would use him as a scapegoat so he would take the blame for her actions, leading him to becoming a detested figure by the inhabitants of the Realm of Shadow, most notably the Hornsent. He also appears to have a compassionate side for others, most notably for Radahn and Gaius, viewing the two as his elder brothers. This side of compassion also extends towards his soldiers that follow him, going as far as to honor and mourn for those that have fallen, even the ones that tried to rebel against him, such as Huw and Andreas. He also holds a room filled with Living Jars, where he looks after them with tender care. While continuing his crusade in the Realm of Shadow and being unaware that his mother had merely used him as a tool and had ceased all contact with him, Messmer remained bound by his loyalty to the Golden Order and to an extent, the role that he was given by Queen Marika, hoping that she will one day return for him. Due to this, he tasks himself to take out the Tarnished, in spite of having no real animosity towards them and instead does so out of a sense of duty. Upon defeat, however, when he finally realized that Marika had indeed abandoned him after what was supposed to be an eternity of abandonment, Messmer immediately renounced her as his mother in his final moments and even cursed her with his dying breath.
