The clock on the wall ticked like a slow knife tapping against the glass—steady, irritating, and loud enough to remind everyone that the meeting wasn't over yet. Outside the thick windows, the city pulsed with neon and rain. Inside, the walls held their breath.

Another man spoke—loud enough to be heard, but not loud enough to matter. His voice was smooth, perhaps too smooth, and carried the scent of a man who had rehearsed every word twice in front of a mirror.
