Main characters edit Kaguya Shinomiya edit Voiced by: Aoi Koga [ 1 ] (Japanese), Alexis Tipton [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Kanna Hashimoto [ 3 ] The series' titular character, Kaguya Shinomiya (四宮 かぐや, Shinomiya Kaguya ) is the vice-president of the Shuchiin Academy student council . She is known for her beauty, intelligence, and wealth, with her family owning one of the largest business conglomerates in Japan. Ch. 1 Due to being born into a high-class family, Kaguya's upbringing has led her to become prideful, cold, and calculating; but beneath her personality traits, she is an innocent, kind, and righteous teenager at heart. Her social status and upbringing also cause her emotional distress due to loneliness and isolation. Despite her intelligence and resources, she is surprisingly inexperienced in using social media and digital technology (though she excels at older, analog input methods like the typewriter). She is also quite naive when it comes to romance and sexuality, having learned to use fashion and femininity to her advantage. To get Miyuki to confess her love, directly or indirectly, she usually plans in advance to tilt the circumstances in her favor. In addition to engaging in student council work, she is also a member of the archery club. Ch. 28 Ch. 28

It is revealed later in the story that Kaguya was born from an extramarital affair between her father and a prostitute named Nayotake Shimizu, who died less than a month after giving birth to her. Ch. 254. Because of this, she would not be considered part of the family according to tradition. Although her father still considers her a member of the family like his other children, she continues to be protected as a political tool by her two older brothers. Ch. 249

Akasaka said that he modeled Kaguya to be like Kaguya-hime , in the sense that they are both princesses at first, but have something deeper about their character later on. He made both Kaguya and Miyuki have similar personalities at first, proud and intellectual, but later revealing themselves to be more like "clumsy idiots" on the inside. He would eventually have the two follow different paths in terms of tendencies, with Kaguya becoming more of a "rebellious young lady". Akasaka also said that although Kaguya has a dark side, he didn't want people to hate her, so he tries to keep the positive and negative emotions in her balanced. [ 4 ]

Miyuki Shirogane edit Voiced by: Makoto Furukawa [ 1 ] (Japanese), Aaron Dismuke , [ 2 ] Clifford Chapin (season 3) (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Sho Hirano [ 3 ] Miyuki Shirogane (白銀 御行, Shirogane Miyuki ) (白銀 御行, Shirogane Miyuki) is the Student Council President of Shuchiin Academy. - Ch. 1 He is famous for being the school's top student, having also placed second overall in the national mock exams, which is attributed to his constant studying, which explains his messy hair, dark circles under his eyes, and piercing gaze. Ch. 4 Like Kaguya, he is inexperienced in romance and relationships. Miyuki has difficulty with physical sports that involve skills and has a paralyzing fear of insects , especially cockroaches . Ch. 7, 15 Due to his father, who was formerly a factory owner, Ch. Ch. 83 is unemployed and his mother—who left the family when he was a child—is unsupportive, he and his younger sister, Kei, frequently work part-time jobs. Akasaka said he initially thought of naming Miyuki Mikado, in reference to the Emperor in the story of Kaguya-hime , but found he liked Otomo no Miyuki better. He developed Miyuki to start out as a twin in Kaguya's personality and character, and he would later diverge to become a "good boy." Akasaka likes the fact that he can portray Miyuki as calm and composed on the outside, while her mind is always racing on the inside. [ 4 ]

Chika Fujiwara edit Voiced by: Konomi Kohara [ 5 ] (Japanese), Jad Saxton [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Nana Asakawa [ 6 ] Chika Fujiwara (藤原 千花, Fujiwara Chika) is the secretary of the student council at Shuchiin Academy. [ 7 ] Chika is a fair-skinned young woman with shoulder-length silver hair (light pink in the anime), a black bow in the middle of her square bangs , blue eyes, and a large bust. She has been friends with Kaguya Shinomiya since elementary school; however, their closeness is not evident to others due to Kaguya's personality. Despite being skilled in languages, singing, and various sports, Chika is often portrayed as an airhead who does not take academic studies seriously compared to her peers. Although she claims to be an expert at reading emotions, the accuracy of her readings tends to be somewhat inconsistent; For example, she can tell that Miko has feelings for Yu, despite her antagonistic attitude towards him, Ch. 226 , but she is the only member of the student council who hasn't discovered that Kaguya and Miyuki have started dating. Ch. 223 This lack of social awareness regarding Kaguya and Miyuki's relationship fuels much of the conflict in the love games between the two, such as when she married Miyuki in The Game of Life Ch. 53 and also when she ate her lunch. Ch. 5 Despite this, she does her best to help cheer up the student council members and is often the first to offer emotional support.

Yu Ishigami edit Voiced by: Ryōta Suzuki [ 5 ] (Japanese), Austin Tindle [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Hayato Sano [ 8 ] Yu Ishigami (石上 優, Ishigami Yū ) is the treasurer of the Shuchiin Academy student council and is a year younger than the other members. Ch. 24 He is a dark-haired boy with an emo-style haircut, with his bangs covering one eye. The youngest son of a small toymaker, he only attended school because his father forced him to, and was a truant until Miyuki recruited him to be treasurer. He usually keeps to himself and wears headphones while playing video games on his handheld console. However, he is a keen observer of people, noticing things others don't want to reveal, but occasionally gets into trouble for pointing these things out. Ch. 28, profile He is afraid that Kaguya might kill him, as she often gives him threatening looks and makes comments. Vol. 3 Chika also occasionally hits him for making inappropriate comments. Vol. 3

As the story progresses, Yu becomes more open with the student council, especially Kaguya, who begins to enjoy his presence as a junior, as he is very honest and sincere with others, to the point of damaging his own reputation to prevent others from being hurt. A backstory reveals that in middle school, he tried to protect a classmate from her potentially abusive boyfriend, but ended up getting suspended and later rejected by her and her classmates. Miyuki and the student council discover him and support him. Yu eventually overcomes his trauma and is able to move on. Ch. 85-90 Ch. 85-90 He begins to like Tsubame, his senior and vice-captain of the cheerleading team, which he joined by chance. Ch. 104 Ch. 104 During the school festival, he casually gives Tsubame a heart-shaped gift, unaware that it symbolizes a confession of love. Yu ends up going on several dates with Tsubame, but she breaks up with him on her graduation day due to her uncertainty about dating a younger man and because she loved her platonically rather than romantically. Akasaka said he designed Yu's character to not interfere with the relationship between Kaguya, Miyuki, and Chika. He describes Yu as taciturn and having little presence, being able to come and go at a moment's notice, which became useful as a running joke. [ 4 ] When asked if he resembles any of his characters, he said he is also like Yu in that he has some negative thoughts and that in high school he also had a crush on a senior girl. [ 9 ]

Ai Hayasaka edit Voiced by: Yumiri Hanamori [ 5 ] (Japanese), AmaLee [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Mayu Hotta [ 6 ] Ai Hayasaka (早坂 愛, Hayasaka Ai ) is Kaguya's personal attendant and childhood friend; her father is Kaguya's godfather, and her mother was Kaguya's nurse . The two girls were raised together until the age of two, when Kaguya was transferred to the Shinomiya main house; upon their reunion at age seven, their official master/maid relationship was established. Vol. 2, Ch. 29 profile Her family has served the Shinomiya for generations; once prominent and rivaling the Shinomiya, they were later absorbed into the Shinomiya family in recognition of their good lineage. Ch. 19 She has short, blonde hair and is slightly Irish. Ch. 29 profile At school, she acts like a popular and stylish girl, wearing a short skirt, a loose collar, flashy nails, and accessories, all of which exceed the dress code. Ch. 25, 29 She keeps her association with Kaguya a secret from Miyuki and Chika. When Miyuki visits, she disguises herself as a maid named Smirka A. Haski (スミシー・A・ハーサカ, Sumishī A Hāsaka, in the anime: Smithee A. Herthaka) Ch. 35, who attends a girls' school and who flirts with Miyuki. Ch. 58 When Chika visits, she poses as the butler, Mr. Haski. Ch. 106 Ai is more socially conscious than Kaguya, and can be calculating at times, but is also very sensitive, as she longs too much for a normal high school life and a boyfriend, which results in her frequently deceiving Kaguya. Ch. 42 She eventually tells Miyuki who she really is and becomes her friend, while taunting Kaguya that friendship is the first step to a relationship. Miko Iino edit Voiced by: Miyu Tomita [ 10 ] (Japanese), Madeleine Morris (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Yūka Kageyama [ 11 ] Miko Iino (伊井野 ミコ, Iino Miko ) is a first-year student and Yu's classmate. [ c ] A member of the disciplinary committee, she first appears at the end of Miyuki's first term as student council president, when she runs for president of the next council. She wants to enforce more orderly and appropriate behavior among the students, with rules such as requiring boys to have crew cuts, girls to wear long skirts, and prohibiting relationships. Despite being outspoken and opinionated, she is very shy and afraid of public speaking. She is only able to express her ideas in the candidates' speeches when Miyuki turns the situation into a one-on-one conversation and debate. Although she loses the election, she receives a considerable number of votes; her classmates, who previously mocked her low vote count, begin to respect and admire her. She then joins the student council as a financial auditor, while remaining on the disciplinary committee. Vol. 7 Later, her authoritarian nature softens as she realizes that not only does she need to see things from others' perspectives, but also that her methods are overly rigid. Ch. 233

Miko's sense of justice runs in her family: her father is a high court judge and her mother works for an international humanitarian aid organization. Academically, she is top of her class and admires Chika for her musical skills as a pianist, but detests Yu for being lazy and not taking his studies seriously. She used to think of Miyuki and Kaguya as huge playboys and sadistically evil, respectively, as she often caught them in inappropriate romantic situations. Vol. 7-8 Vol. 7-8 She supported Yu in his pursuit of Tsubame as a girlfriend, but realizes she has developed feelings for him. Ch. 190 Ch. 190

Miko later became council president, managing to overcome the nervousness that ruined her speech in the previous election, while also abandoning her former nature and prioritizing the wishes of those around her. Ch. 275 Ch. 275 As president, she focuses on recruiting people to the council who can effectively implement ideas from both the previous student council and her own. Ch. 278 Ch. 278

Akasaka created Miko with a contrasting personality, where she initially appears as a serious member of the Disciplinary Committee, but internally has a slightly perverted behavior; or as a model student, but who lets her guard down easily when a boy is kind to her. Miko was also useful as a closing joke to end one chapter, where she would run into the student council room and comment on the embarrassing situation. [ 4 ]

Secondary characters edit Shuchiin Academy edit Nagisa Kashiwagi edit Voiced by: Momo Asakura [ 12 ] (Japanese), Bryn Apprill [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Natsumi Ikema [ 6 ] Nagisa Kashiwagi (柏木 渚, Kashiwagi Nagisa ) is a classmate who occasionally asks Kaguya about her relationship plans. Ch. 16, 48 She has short, dark hair and wears a two-strand clip on one side. Early in the series, she is confessed to by a classmate , and eventually accepts. Ch. 6 The daughter of a wealthy shipbuilding family, Ch. 49 [ 13 ] academically, is in the top ten of her class Ch. 30 and head of the school volunteer club. Ch. 16, 51 Later, she remarks that Kaguya and Miyuki might like each other. Ch. 51 Nagisa exhibits many typical girlfriend behaviors, such as talking a lot, being emotionally unstable, or even being jealous to the point of hiring a private detective to spy on her boyfriend to see if he is having an affair, only to later make up with him by being physically bold and passionate. Ch. 76, 97 While she begins by asking Kaguya for relationship advice, in later chapters, their roles are reversed as Nagisa speaks of her experiences in romantic pursuits. Vol. 14

She breaks up with Tsubasa near the end of the story after hearing that Maki had been in love with him for 7 years, Ch. 273 Ch. 273 However, Maki convinces her to get back together with him after realizing that she is still in love with him. After seeing Tsubasa again, she faints , with a visit to the hospital where Tsubasa's grandfather works confirming that she is 3 months pregnant. Ch. 274 Ch. 274

Tsubasa Tanuma/ Kashiwagi's boyfriend edit Voiced by: Taku Yashiro [ 12 ] (Japanese), Brandon McInnis [ 2 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Yūtarō [ 6 ] Tsubasa Tanuma (田沼 翼, Tanuma Tsubasa) Ch. 109, 180 , initially known only as Kashiwagi's (柏木の彼氏, Kashiwagi no kareshi) boyfriend, is a classmate who frequently asks Miyuki for love advice early in the series. When Miyuki recommends him to boldly confess to Kashiwagi, he does so, and they eventually become a couple. Ch. 6 He is the son of a hospital director and the grandson of the Shinomiya family doctor. Ch. 49, 79 Tsubasa's grandfather, in particular, believes his family is cursed, as both he and his son (Tsubasa's father) became fathers at age 17. Kei Shirogane edit Voiced by: Sayumi Suzushiro [ 12 ] (Japanese), Heather Walker [ 14 ] (Portuguese) Kei Shirogane (白銀 圭, Shirogane Kei ) is Miyuki's younger sister and the treasurer of the student council at Shuchiin Middle School. Kaguya admires her because she is so much like her brother, being quite serious; being with her is like being with Miyuki. Ch. 39, 52 After her parents separated when she was young, Kei initially stayed with her mother, but ran away to live with her father and brother. Ch. 208 She is rebellious when it comes to interacting with her brother, finding him annoying and lacking in style, Ep. 39, 52, 83 but still cares for him and makes sure he presents a good image in front of his classmates. She is good friends with the Fujiwaras, both her classmate Moeha and Chika. Although she doesn't interact much with Kaguya, Kei tries to get to know her better and is happy when she makes small discoveries about her. Ch. 52 Upon discovering that her brother and Kaguya are dating, she is more than excited to help him, as it would mean she would get to spend more time with Kaguya and the two would become related. Ch. 83

Moeha Fujiwara edit Voiced by: Ari Ozawa [ 15 ] (Japanese), Kara Edwards [ 14 ] (Portuguese) Moeha Fujiwara (藤原 萌葉, Fujiwara Moeha) is Chika's younger sister, the vice-president of the student council at Shuchiin Academy Middle School, and a classmate and friend of Kei. Ch. 39, 52 She also admires Miyuki and hopes to confess her love to him someday. Ch. 52, 126 Moeha has a habit of expressing dark ideas, which makes Kaguya quite uncomfortable. Ch. 52

Maki Shijo edit Voiced by: Kana Ichinose [ 16 ] (Japanese), Hope Endrenyi [ 14 ] (Portuguese) Maki Shijo (四条 眞妃, Shijō Maki ) is Nagisa's classmate and best friend. She has short hair styled in two ponytails. Maki is Nagisa's friend and secretly jealous of Nagisa's relationship with her boyfriend, as she also liked him but was unable to confess in time. Ch. 61, 98 A running gag early in the series is that she appears in the panels after the chapters, seemingly watching the two with a distressed look.

As a member of the Shinomiya branch clan, she is Kaguya's second cousin twice removed, so she sometimes refers to Kaguya as "aunt," much to Kaguya's chagrin. It is suggested that the coldness between them is due to tensions between the main family and the branch families. Ch. 98 Ch. 98 Yu considers her a tsundere (cold on the outside, but willing to be affectionate), and Miyuki thinks she is very similar to Kaguya in terms of personality. Ch. 98 Ch. 98 She declares Yu and Miyuki her friends, due to the support they provided in helping her cope with her failed romance, which horrifies Kaguya (as this would mean Miyuki would have another potential rival in romance). Ch. 98, 109 Ch. 98, 109 However, over time, Kaguya and Maki's relationship improves somewhat.

Kobachi Osaragi edit Voiced by: Rina Hidaka [ 10 ] (Japanese), Leah Clark (Portuguese) Kobachi Osaragi (大仏 こばち, Osaragi Kobachi ) is Miko's classmate, a bespectacled woman, and a member of the disciplinary committee. Ch. 85 She has taken care of Miko for over ten years, quite literally, due to Miko's naive nature. Ch. 103 She later begins dating the Accelerator Club Captain, but eventually breaks up with him. Ch. 122 Her parents were television celebrities, and she was on her way to becoming a child star until a scandal hit her family, and so she has kept a low profile since elementary school. Ch. 192 In later chapters, she reveals to Kaguya that she repressed her own romantic feelings for Yu in order to support Miko, but eventually lets slip that she may only be Miko's friend in name. Ch. 231-232

Tsubame Koyasu edit Voiced by: Haruka Fukuhara [ 17 ] (Japanese), Tia Ballard (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Haruka Fukuhara Tsubame Koyasu (子安 つばめ, Koyasu Tsubame ) is a popular third-year student, vice-captain of the cheerleading team, and a rhythmic gymnast. Ch. 82, 116 She is the daughter of a restaurateur and a bartender . Ch. 154 She encourages Yu to participate and have fun, Ch. 90, 104 but is shocked when Yu inadvertently confesses his love to her during the school festival. After talking with Kaguya, she tells Yu that she will give him an answer when he chooses the time, even though Yu does not yet know that she has confessed her love. Ch. 130 At her Christmas party, she offers her body to Yu, but is refused when Yu realizes she is doing it out of pity and not genuine affection. She continues to support Yu as he promises to improve for her, Ch. 156 , and greatly appreciates the love advice of a certain fortune teller (Miyuki's father). Ch. 160 She and Yu go on a date, Ch. 176 , but by the time of his graduation, she's done with the romantic side of things and only wants to remain friends. She redeems herself by orchestrating a school rumor that dispels the false accusation that had plagued him since elementary school. Ch. 201-204 The two maintained a happy, if somewhat awkward, friendship.

Akasaka shared that he also liked an older girl when he was in middle school. [ 9 ] The fact that she was graduating would also create an interesting storyline for Yu. [ 4 ]

Karen Kino and Erika Kose edit Karen voiced by: Madoka Asahina (Japanese); Lindsay Seidel (English) Erika voiced by: Ayaka Asai (Japanese); Kristen McGuire (English) Karen Kino (紀 かれん, Kino Karen ) and Erika Kose (巨瀬 エリカ, Kose Erika ) are Kaguya's schoolmates in the mass media club who are the protagonists of the spin-off Kaguya-sama o Kataritai . They idolize the student council, but have no idea what they do. Karen has straight, light brown hair and is the daughter of the CEO of a large publishing company. She spends a lot of time fantasizing about Miyuki and Kaguya, as well as writing fanfiction manga about them, which she has only shown to a few people. Ch. 12 Erika has black hair tied in a ponytail and is the daughter of a family that makes miso . Ch. 15 Erika's obsession is entirely focused on Kaguya.

Others edit "Papa Shirogane" Father of Miyuki and Kei Shirogane edit Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu [ 18 ] (Japanese), Tyson Rineheart [ 14 ] (Portuguese) Portrayed by: Masahiro Takashima [ 6 ] "Papa Shirogane" (白銀父, Shirogane Chichi ) is Miyuki and Kei's father. After his wife left him seven years earlier due to the closure of their factory, he spends most of his time unemployed. Ch. 83 He does random activities such as fortune-telling and giving advice. Ch. 111 He later talks about this in a successful live broadcast , much to the shock of both his children. Ch. 191 It is later revealed that his factory's sudden change in fortune was due to the interference of older members of the Shinomiya group; although he holds no grudge against Kaguya, he encourages them to enjoy their relationship. Ch. 208-209 .

Un'yo Shinomiya edit Un'yo Shinomiya (四宮 雲鷹, Shinomiya Un'yō ) is the third son of Gan'an Shinomiya, the only child of his second wife, and Kaguya's older half-brother. Because he and Kaguya are not children of Gan'an's first wife, they have less power within the company, leading him to become overprotective of his younger sister. Ch. 242. His cold and blunt demeanor, his intimidation tactics, and his hatred of traitors created Kaguya's initial icy personality. Despite this, he always has the best intentions for his younger sister, such as when he hunted down Ai after discovering she was passing information to his older brother, Oko, while also respecting Kaguya's decision to forgive her. Ch. 184-186 Furthermore, he also helps ensure that Miyuki is well protected during the Shinomiya-Shijo conflict, as he knows that he would be a threat to Kaguya's marriage to Mikado. Ch. 242

Oko Shinomiya edit Oko Shinomiya (四宮 黄光, Shinomiya Okō ) is the eldest son of Gan'an Shinomiya and heir to the Shinomiya Group. He is portrayed as a rude and manipulative person, being the most ambitious member of the Shinomiya Group, having been raised with the promise that he would inherit his father's conglomerate. He goes to great lengths to interfere in his brothers' lives, such as taking advantage of Ai when she was young and using her friendship with Kaguya to spy on her, as well as discouraging her from pursuing higher education so she could live as a housewife. He holds feudalistic beliefs about society, namely that women serve only as political tools who marry rival groups to secure alliances. Ch. 209 However, these beliefs likely formed as a way to cope with his father's poor treatment, as he himself was married to a more powerful woman, which forced him to break up with his high school sweetheart. Ch. 249 Later, Oko reveals that her desire to marry Kaguya and take over the company stems from her fear that an inter-company war with the Shijo Group would cause most of the people under the Shinomiya Group's protection to lose their jobs, likely driving many of them to suicide. In the end, Kaguya makes a deal with Oko; he must cancel the arranged marriage and leave her friends alone, and in exchange, Kaguya will not interfere in the Shinomiya Group's internal politics. Mikado Shijo edit Mikado Shijo (四条 帝, Shijō Mikado ) is Maki Shijo's younger twin brother, Kaguya's second cousin once removed, and heir to the Shijo Group. Initially introduced as a rival to Miyuki for Kaguya's affections, he backs down almost immediately upon realizing the two are happy together, and he and Miyuki eventually become close friends. Gan'an Shinomiya edit Gan'an Shinomiya (四宮 雁庵, Shinomiya Gan'an ) is the patriarch of the Shinomiya Group. He adopted a cold and ruthless nature from a young age to build the company he created, but this eventually consumed his entire personality. This led to him becoming absent from his children's lives, as he often left for long business trips to help expand the company, as well as to teach his children to view marriage and friendship as nothing more than business. However, when he physically appears in the series, he is already on the verge of death and cannot even recognize his own children due to a stroke , which caused him to develop vascular dementia, frequently mistaking Un'yo for Oko and calling Kaguya by his deceased mother's name. While not to the same extent as Oko, it is shown that he developed a somewhat lewd view of women, as he cheated on his wife with a prostitute who later gave birth to Kaguya. Ch. 242 Despite this, everything he did was to ensure his family could live a successful life, and he cares deeply for all of his children. This family honor goes so far that, although he may not even be her father, he still considers Kaguya his daughter and regrets how harshly he treated his children.
