Blue Diamond is one of the leaders of the Gem Empire in Steven Universe and sister to Yellow, White, and Pink Diamond. She is the embodiment of empathy, sadness, and melancholy, in contrast to Yellow's rational toughness. Her gem, a blue diamond, is located in the palm of her right hand.

Blue Diamond is a majestic, tall, and ethereal figure with pale blue skin, long hair that covers part of her face, and a dark cloak that reinforces her solemn aura. Her soft, deep voice conveys a constant sense of mourning. Since Pink Diamond's disappearance, Blue has sunk into a perpetual sadness that affects even those around her: her emotional power can cause other Gems to cry involuntarily, reflecting her immense pain.

At the character level, Blue is compassionate but passive. She loves deeply, but her attachment to the past consumes her. She believes remembering and mourning Pink is a way to honor her, while Yellow prefers to forget and move on. This difference causes a constant conflict between the two.

In her early appearances, Blue Diamond is seen as a fearsome leader, but also as someone deeply wounded. Her grief makes her vulnerable and, at the same time, dangerous: her sadness becomes a force that can paralyze an entire planet. However, her encounter with Steven—and the discovery that he is the reincarnation of Pink—allows her to begin a process of understanding and forgiveness.
