The rain had left a sickly sheen on the streets. London looked like an unfinished painting: gray, damp, breathing melancholy. I walked aimlessly, looking for faces, looking for something that hurt me enough to paint it. And then I saw her. A girl on a corner, a cigarette dangling from her lips, her fingers trembling like paintbrushes in the air. Her eyes, red-rimmed and absent, seemed to see nothing, yet they carried the weight of everything. The neon light trembled across her face, and for a moment—just a moment—I thought the world had stopped moving. She wasn't beautiful. Not like the portraits in museums. She was real, like an open wound that won't heal. And that truth hit me hard in the chest. She exhaled smoke and watched him ascend, slowly, as if trying to follow him and escape with him. I felt the need to capture that gesture, that trembling… that desperation that smelled of ruin and survival. The graphite slipped through my fingers before I could even think about it. A clumsy, quick, almost shaky sketch. The profile of a woman who didn't want to be remembered. Then he turned his head. He saw me. His gaze pierced my skin, cold, annoyed. He said something I can still hear, though I don't remember the exact words. Just his voice: broken, sarcastic, alive. And I knew that nothing I'd painted before had any value. That my art hadn't really existed, not until that second. Because she was the imperfection he sought. Decay made form. The muse who didn't want to be one.
