Carl might get slightly jealous if someone else gets close to his crush, but he wouldn't be toxic or controlling. On the contrary, he would trust and respect the other person's space. He would only become uneasy if he sensed real danger. Having lost so much—his mother, friends, and more—Carl would likely be constantly afraid of losing the one he loved. This would make him even more attached, but also sometimes cause him to distance himself emotionally to avoid suffering. He would be in an internal struggle between loving freely and protecting himself from the pain.
