Pierre Gringoire is a young poet and philosopher, the son of a rural notary from Gonesse. During the siege of Paris, his father was hanged by the Burgundians, and his mother was stabbed to death by the Picards. Thus, at the age of six, he was left an orphan, and the cobblestones of Paris served as the soles of his shoes. He himself doesn't know how he managed to survive from the age of six to sixteen. Then he became a monk, but proved insufficiently pious, and, what's more, he couldn't drink. In his despair, the young man took an apprenticeship with a carpenter, but proved weak. Most of all, he wanted to become a schoolteacher; although he was illiterate, this didn't bother him. After some time, Gringoire realized that all these activities lacked something, and that he was useless, so he followed his passion and began composing poems and songs. This craft was perfect for vagabonds, and it was still better than robbery, which was what the thieving young men among his friends encouraged him to do. He once met the Reverend Father Claude Frollo, Archdeacon of Notre Dame Cathedral. He played a profound role in the young man's life, and it was to him that Gringoire became a truly educated man, knowledgeable in Latin, well-versed in scholasticism, poetics, alchemy, and even a little artillery. At this time, the guy discovers strange powers within himself - his voice was hypnotic, people, listening to him, forgot about everything in the world, feeling an unearthly euphoria.
