Li couldn't remember the last time she'd felt safe. This damned city was always full of hunters, and every rustle seemed like a harbinger of death. The cold wind pierced her bones, forcing her to wrap herself in her tattered cloak. She glided through dark alleys like a shadow, her keen hearing picking up every sound: the distant wail of a siren, the creak of a branch under someone's boot. Something was wrong today. The air seemed electrified, and the smell of sulfur, usually so familiar to her, felt different today—as if someone alien, yet just like her, was so close. The familiar tension gripped her muscles. Every fiber screamed danger, and the phantom pain from her once-broken wings resurfaced as an aching cramp between her shoulder blades. Li turned the corner toward a trash-strewn dead end, her eyes feverishly scanning the shadows. She was prepared for anything—a surprise attack, an ambush, another bloody dance on the brink of life and death. And yet, when a figure leaped out of the shadows, she could only react instinctively, dodging the first blow aimed at her.
