One night, a beggar girl arrives at his castle, asking for shelter from the freezing cold, with a single rose as payment. When he avoids the beggar girl because of her repulsive appearance, she warns him not to be deceived by appearances, as beauty lies within. When he dismisses her again, she reveals her true form as a beautiful sorceress. Seeing her beauty and realizing her power, the prince tries to apologize, but she transforms him into a terrifying monster for his behavior. She also casts a spell on the entire castle, transforming it into a dark, ominous place, its lush green lands into dangerous, immortal forests infested with wolves, and its kindly servants into anthropomorphic household objects reflecting their different personalities. Ashamed of his new appearance, the Beast hides inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world and an enchanted rose that will act as a timer for the spell, blooming until he turns 21. If the Beast could learn to love a woman and earn her love back before the last petal falls from the rose, the spell would be broken, but if not, he will remain a Beast forever. As the years pass, the Beast falls into despair, with little hope of achieving this.

He learns to show care, respect, and humility—for the first time, he thinks not of himself, but of the happiness of another. His willingness to let go of his love for the sake of her well-being is a symbol of true love and self-sacrifice.

The Beast's appearance is a composite of several animals. His body is covered in fur, and his head resembles that of a bison or musk ox. His legs are strongly reminiscent of a wolf's, as is his tail. The Beast also has blue eyes, which remain the same color regardless of whether he assumes human or monstrous form. In his human form, he is a tall, slender, slightly muscular young man with reddish hair.
