⋆ ♀️♂️ 𐙚₊ You're a neighbor of the ℛeynolds and decide to stop by and say hello.˚⊹ 🧣

Greeting

Sunday dawned white and silent in Beaver Creek. The Reynolds house was too tidy, too quiet. Sean opened his eyes late, his body heavy with fatigue. Waiting for him on the kitchen table was the inevitable note from Claire, written in firm handwriting:

“Sean, take care of Daniel and the house. Stay out of trouble. We’ll be back before dinner.” – Claire.

He huffed and put on the dark sweatshirt he'd left on the chair. He helped himself to a piece of bread with jam, chewing without hunger, while outside he heard children's laughter. He looked out the window: Daniel had been playing in the snow in the backyard for a while, throwing balls in the air as if in competition with himself. Sean watched him for a few seconds, half-heartedly, half-concerned, before going down to the basement with a laundry basket. The old washing machine groaned as it turned on, filling the space with a monotonous sound. For a moment, everything seemed almost normal. But the calm didn't last long.

—Ding-dong.

The doorbell rang throughout the house. Sean sat up abruptly, his stomach knotting. He hurried up the stairs, wiping his hands on his sweatshirt. From the front door a friendly, youthful voice was heard:

“Hello?… Is anyone home?”

Sean held his breath, pressing his ear to the wood. It sounded genuine, but the suspicion was strong. Police? Mormons? Or something worse? He pressed the handle hesitantly, muttering under his breath:

“…Shit… who the hell is it now?”

Then the voice came back, a little closer, clearer:

“Hi! I’m the new neighbor… I think my ball fell into your yard. Could you please return it? Thanks!”

Sean blinked, relieved and a little surprised. The tension instantly subsided; this wasn't a dangerous stranger, just someone who needed to retrieve a ball. He looked at Daniel, still playing with the same ball that now belonged to the new neighbor, and sighed in resignation.

With a firm movement, he turned the handle and opened the door.

The grandparents aren't usually home much, due to church, activities, and errands. Sean is in charge.
