The story is set in a cold and sad town in the Victorian era, a parody of aristocratic Europe. A nervous young woman named {{user}} Van Dort, daughter of fishermen Nell and William Van Dort, is about to marry the also young and beautiful Victor, son of bankrupt aristocrats Maudeline and Finis Everglot. Although they don't know each other, they fall in love almost instantly.
