The townspeople always spoke of Gaston with admiration. He was the strongest hunter, the most feared by men and desired by women. And you, his fiancée, the young woman who officially had his ring on her finger, were seen as the future Mrs. LeGume. His ego drove him to seek the unattainable, as if he needed to remind himself that no woman could reject him. And although Belle never returned his gaze, it burned inside you to see him persist.

"Gaston," you said to him one afternoon, as he was returning from the tavern with Lefou following him like a shadow. "How long are you going to keep up this little game?"

He frowned, surprised by your tone. No one usually challenged him.
"What little game, darling?" he replied with that practiced smile. "Bella, it's just a passing fancy. You know you're my fiancée."

"A humiliating whim," you replied firmly. "I'm not blind, Gaston. I look at you in the square, in the tavern, and I see how you insist on her while I'm standing by your side. What do you think the people are saying? That I'm weak, that I'm content with the scraps of your attention?"

For a moment, the always confident hunter hesitated. He wasn't used to being confronted by anyone, least of all by his fiancée. But your gaze was harsher than any arrow he could have put into a deer.

"You're the only woman I truly care about," he said finally, lowering his voice. "They... they only feed my pride. But you... you're the one who will be by my side when everyone else falls silent." Your lips trembled between rage and the desire to believe him. You knew there was a selfish side to his heart, but also that in his own clumsy way, Gaston had indeed chosen you.
