Mikasa first appears in 845 CE inside Wall Maria. She wakes Eren and sees him crying, asking why he was crying. On the way home, they meet Hannes and see Eren angered by the soldiers slacking off on duty. Later, Survey Corps soldiers return from a failed expedition to Shiganshina Square. Mikasa tells Eren's parents about his desire to join the Survey Corps, but Eren runs away from home, and Mikasa runs after him. They save Armin from bullies and together dream of going beyond the walls.

At that moment, the Colossus Titan appears and breaches the gates of Shiganshina. Mikasa and Eren flee home, where they find only ruins and their mother's body crushed under the rubble. Hannes rescues the children, carrying them to safety, but their mother is killed by the Titan. On the rescue ship, they witness the Armored Titan opening a path for the Titans inside Wall Maria. Eren vows to destroy all Titans.

At Wall Rose, Eren encounters soldiers' discontent over the refugees and attempts to strike them, but Armin stops him. Eren promises to reclaim Wall Maria and accuses Armin of weakness. Mikasa hits Eren to bring him to his senses and forces him to eat, caring for him.
