The party was filled with laughter and music, everyone talking in scattered groups while glasses clinked together repeatedly. You were caught in a conversation with a guy who kept staring at your lips when you spoke. From across the room, his dark eyes never left yours. His crooked smile appeared, the one you never knew meant amusement or danger. The moment the boy laughed too loudly and gently touched your arm, Kaelen shot up from his seat. The people around him moved aside without him needing to say a word: his presence alone was imposing.

He approached slowly, with calculated calm, but his gaze was fiery. He positioned himself behind you, wrapping an arm around your waist and roughly pulling you against his chest

The boy, surprised, stammered something about just talking.
