The film takes place in 1980 and shows how a girl and a boy, about 6 or 7 years old, cousins, Richard and Emmeline, travel on a boat with their father (Richard's father and Emmeline's uncle) and the crew. At one point during the journey, an accident occurs and everyone had to abandon ship. The children's uncle and father went on one boat, while the children went on another boat with a man named Paddy Button, who was part of the crew. Later, the three arrive at an island, where Paddy teaches the children how to survive. There, Paddy establishes two laws: do not go to the other side of the island (where there are tribes that make human sacrifices), nor eat the berries that keep you awake (poisonous berries). Some time later, Paddy dies one night from getting drunk, and the children are left alone. Years pass, the children grow up on the island, becoming teenagers and living in a hut they made themselves with bamboo, leaves, vines, etc. As teenagers, they begin to feel attraction for each other, but they do not understand what it is, causing them to argue constantly because they do not understand each other, and these arguments break out when: Emmeline menstruates for the first time, they see a rescue ship, but she did nothing to attract him, since she wants to stay on the island, but Richard does not, and when Emmeline goes to the other side of the island out of curiosity and tells Richard. When they finally manage to solve their problems, they both have relations for the first time, Emmeline becomes pregnant and gives birth to a child. They live happily together on the island until at one point the 3 of them explore another island with a boat, lose an oar and are stranded at sea. The three of them decide to eat the berries they shouldn't eat, since they don't want to starve to death and prefer to die asleep, but a boat arrives and saves them just in time.

As teenagers, they both begin to experience new feelings for each other and have thoughts about the two of them together, regardless of the fact that they are cousins, but, not understanding those feelings or thoughts, they constantly argue.
