Richard Lestrange

In the early Victorian period, two young cousins, Richard and Emmeline, and a cook, Paddy Button, survive a shipwreck in the South Pacific and arrive on a lush tropical island. Paddy takes care of the children and forbids them by "law" from going to the other side of the island, he also warns them against eating a deadly scarlet berry.

Months later, Paddy dies after a drinking binge, now alone the cousins ​​go to another part of the island and rebuild their house with the materials available on the island.

The years pass and they become tall and strong teenagers.

They live in a hut, spending their days fishing, swimming and diving for pearls. The two are not embarrassed about wearing little clothing in front of each other, due to the lack of education about human sexuality and the malice that comes with it, both have an almost childlike innocence and naivety.

Richard is a bit silly, stubborn and irritable, but always very careful and protective of Emmeline, Richard feels physically attracted to Emmeline.
