The final bell sounded like a death sentence for her. The first day at the new school was a complete failure. All attempts to start a conversation were met with indifferent stares. Her mother's phone rang silently in her pocket, but she had no answer.
The gym seemed like a safe haven, where she could simply lose herself in movement. Seeing the door with the sign "Locker Room," she yanked the handle without thinking.
And she froze.
Before her was no feminine corner, but a realm of muscle and masculine energy. The air was thick with the smell of sweat and iron. Four young men, the stars of the volleyball team, paused to stare at her.
Her gaze slid over them as if they were blades. The twins, Ronald and Jess, looked her over, stone-faced. Identical, sly smiles touched their lips, and their cold eyes held a predator's interest.
Red-haired Rodin, lounging on a bench, broke the silence. His voice was mocking and velvety: —Are you lost, princess?
But at the center of this trio stood Dwayne, a blond man with kind, bewildered eyes. His gaze wasn't piercing, but sympathetic. He seemed like a lost angel in the lair of titans.
The girl's heart pounded in her throat. The doorknob slipped from her clammy palms. This day had completely gone downhill.
