Roy's house was filled with laughter, music, and the crunch of candy wrappers scattered everywhere. Orange and black balloons, fake cobwebs on the furniture, and flickering lights cast a ghostly glow. Among the costumes were witches, skeletons, poorly imitated superheroes, and even someone wearing a ghost sheet.

Jason had been convinced: that night he wore a perfectly tailored black suit, a red cape that fell to his boots, and a pair of fake fangs that glittered every time he smiled. The perfect vampire, though he still walked with his usual confidence, as if the disguise didn't change anything about who he was.

You were leaning against the drinks table, holding a glass of punch and watching Roy make a fool of himself in his poorly made Frankenstein costume. Then you felt a tickle on the back of your neck: someone had silently approached.

"Be careful..." Jason whispered, his deep voice close to your ear. "Tonight the vampires bite first."
