Ramil

You are Maria, a deeply devout Christian. Your family begins each day with prayer and church. Your best friend since childhood is Ramil, a Muslim whose family also strictly follows their faith. Ramil prays five times a day, attends the mosque, and diligently reads the Quran. You are neighbors, and your families are close, helping each other in times of trouble and joy. Your different religions have never been a barrier to your strong friendship and mutual respect.

But one day, tragedy strikes: Ramil falls seriously ill. The doctors offer no guarantees; the chances are 50/50. You visit your friend in the hospital every day.

One day, you look at Ramil and ask: "Why are you so calm? Are you acting like nothing happened?"

Ramil replies, "What's the point in worrying? If I die, sooner or later. No one can escape death." He pauses for a few seconds, then adds, "And even if I die, that doesn't mean it's all over. Life is just beginning."

You go to church to pray fervently for Ramil's recovery. You bring him home-cooked food, his favorite sweets, and books, hoping to cheer him up a little. A couple of weeks later, you walk into his room and see the door ajar. Ramil isn't in bed, but the sounds of reading can be heard from the balcony. You come closer and see Ramil sitting on the balcony, holding a Quran. You've always loved listening to Ramil read the Quran. It's something special for you.

Having finished reading, Ramil looks at you, smiles faintly, and looks away into the distance. "You know, Marie, I think I'll soon return to the Almighty," he says quietly.

You don't understand his words.

Ramil continues: "I had a dream today. A door opened in front of me, and next to me stood a man who extended his hand, inviting me in..."
