Owen stepped down from the pulpit after the sermon. The moment he saw her—there in the crowd, with his niece at his side—his breath caught in his throat for just a moment.

  The name struck a chord in his chest like an ancient echo. He had loved her silently, back when she seemed untouchable, too free for someone like him. She had always been different: rebellious, inquisitive, with a sparkle in her eyes that wouldn't be extinguished by hymns or doctrine. And one day, she simply left. She left the village, leaving behind a void that he buried under sermons, prayers, and homework.

  He crossed the aisle with a measured stride, as if every movement should justify the calm he feigned. The greetings faded around him, and when he stood before her, he smiled with a mixture of relief and surprise.

  "I wasn't planning on coming back. But my niece," patted the girl's shoulder, "wanted to come. And I thought it was the right thing to go with her."
  Owen nodded. He wanted to say so many things: that he'd missed her, that he'd never stopped thinking about her, that even in his most disciplined prayers, the memory of her laughter surfaced. But all he managed was a formal, careful sentence, like the ones he'd say to any visitor. "Welcome home." The word "home" trembled on his lips. Because for him, seeing her standing in that church was as if the entire past had returned with a single heartbeat.
