Karpov is an outright sadist, but he is also honest and fair in his own way. He makes a living by taking bribes and protecting people, and constantly tortures suspects, but he knows his job and the law very well, which allows him to evade responsibility and stay in his position for quite a long time. Karpov is a demanding boss, but he always covers for his subordinates and treats them as equals in personal relationships and maintains familiarity, for which he has earned their respect and authority. Colleagues from other departments treat Karpov with hostility and fear, which, however, does not prevent them from resorting to his informal help. Glukharev, although he does not share Karpov's beliefs and methods, treats him with mutual respect, but without trust. At the time of the assassination attempt on Glukharev, Karpov and his operatives immediately arrived at the supposed shooting position and, on Antoshin's command, shot the killer. Antoshin, in the team under Karpov's leadership, achieved equal respect and trust from Karpov, although in the event of a conflict between Karpov and Zimina or Glukharev, he would certainly take their side. At the beginning of the first season, Zimina and Karpov competed as deputies for the position of head of the police department, which eventually went to Zimina. Karpov tried to persuade her to give up the position to him, but Zimina defended her right. From the second season, Zimina receives 20 percent of all his income from Karpov in exchange for turning a blind eye. In the third season, Karpov bribes a judge to give Zimina a pass on the exam for the position of judge. After this, Zimina, unaware of the bribe, leaves the post of head of the police department and prepares to become a judge, and Karpov, without a single drop of blood, as first deputy, becomes acting head of the police department.

Karpov and his men began searching for pedophiles who were adopting children from an orphanage. Meanwhile, Petrov became mayor. Thanks to him, Karpov learned of a patriotic club where orphans were being held, possibly for very sinister purposes. Infiltrating the club proved no easy task, and so Karpov and his men stormed it at night. Zotov, who, while drunk, accidentally hits and kills a woman and a girl, turns to Karpov for help. He calls Karpov and begs him to help cover up the accident. Together, they cover their tracks and learn that the deceased are the wife and daughter of Prosecutor Chernov. Karpov, meanwhile, has his own problems: Sveta and Dima (a boy from an orphanage). Karpov continues to search for children abducted by pedophiles. A security service working for these same pedophiles is hunting him. Karpov manages to escape the villains, but loses his pistol in the process. Later, the pedophiles' lawyers also begin to dig into Petrov. Karpov goes into hiding in the Moscow region, but things are not going smoothly there either. Local Colonel Platonov draws him into his own feud with local drug dealers. Karpov manages to burn down several drug dens on Platonov's orders, but he also ends up on the wanted list because of operative Tikhy. Platonov is unable to convince Tikhy, so he offers Karpov to kill Tikhy. Karpov agrees. While attempting to assassinate Tikhy, Karpov is captured by his operatives. They begin torturing Karpov to learn Platonov's plans, but Karpov refuses to reveal anything. Tikhy then decides to recruit him. Karpov ultimately chooses Tikhy's side and tells him about Platonov's plans. Tikhy later dies. Karpov then decides to restore order to the land by defeating Platonov and the crime boss Korol. Karpov teams up with other operatives to defeat Korol. However, Karpov was later forced to leave the city, although he was expected to return later, because his drug-addicted assistant, Zhenya, became Platonov's hostage.

Karpov returns to the mental hospital again, this time helping young Anton Podkorytov rescue his girlfriend, who was being held there illegally. Later, Karpov began to mend his relationship with Sveta. Then, Lera's family is murdered, and Karpov begins his own investigation. He begins to realize that her family's rival, Grigory Petrov, is involved in the case. Vadim, a crime boss known to Karpov, returns to Moscow. He's upset by Lera's death and wants to help Karpov investigate the case, but Karpov refuses. Karpov is assigned to work for Petrov, hoping to uncover the truth about him. While working for him, Karpov has to carry out dirty tricks, but he also tries to ally with Petrov's enemies against him. People with knowledge of Petrov's whereabouts begin to die, and this further increases suspicion. Karpov helps his former detective, Antoshin, rescue Nastya's son. However, Antoshin then wanted to betray him, but Karpov spotted the setup just in time. Karpov also manages to discover that Lera's family feared a man named Ogon. Karpov decides to find out who is hiding behind this nickname. Later, Vadim helps Karpov find the killer, who, according to him, was the one who killed Lera and her family. Karpov and Vadim catch the killer, and Vadim kills him. Major Mikhail Zotov joins the investigation into Lera's family's murder. Together with Karpov, he learns of a certain company called "NK-Tek." People from this company later approach Karpov and offer to kill Petrov. Karpov agrees, seeing as he has no other choice. But at the end of the season, it turns out that Vadim himself is Lera's killer, and Karpov brutally deals with him.

Lieutenant Colonel Karpov was declared insane and sent to compulsory treatment. He spent about a year there, after which he was released, where he met his acquaintance, the crime boss Vadim. At first, he had trouble adjusting to his new life. Thanks to Irina Zimina, he got a job as a warehouse security guard, where his partner was a former police officer named Ivashchuk, who was very angry with Karpov.

Karpov also managed to solve several crimes. He began to be pursued by journalists and the relatives of his victims, who sought revenge. Furthermore, police captain Mikhail Zotov became hostile to Karpov. Later, a woman named Lera, who introduced herself as his daughter, visited Karpov. Karpov visited his surviving victims and tried to help them, but they refused. Afterward, Karpov planned to shoot himself. He managed to find a pistol, but it didn't fire, preventing him from committing suicide. Irina Zimina gave Karpov a stun gun so he could defend himself against his enemies.

Karpov begins a relationship with a girl, Sveta, whom he once injured. The owner of the warehouse where Karpov worked initially regretted hiring him, but then Karpov investigates a crime for him, and the owner allows him to continue working there. Furthermore, Karpov was offered a deal by a mysterious police major, and two operatives who were wary of him also attempted to kill him.

Later, the Pharmacy Maniac began operating in Moscow, one of whose victims was Karpov's nephew. Karpov decides to catch the maniac himself to avenge his wounded nephew. After capturing the maniac, the latter commits suicide. Karpov also learns a shocking truth about Lena. At the end of the season, Sveta learns the truth about Karpov, which shocks her. The executioners then kidnap Sveta and offer Karpov a choice: either Sveta will be committed to a mental hospital forever, or Karpov will kill the executioners' enemy, Zimina. But Karpov manages to defeat the executioners and save Sveta without killing Zimina.

Karpov's sister, a drug addict, died. His mother was also hospitalized due to health issues. He was forced to raise his nephew alone. But since Karpov was rarely home and couldn't look after him, he had to temporarily place him in an orphanage. He escaped and returned home. Soon, Karpov's mother recovered, returned home, and took her grandson in to raise her.

Glukhar begins investigating the disappearance of a girl's son. After a lengthy investigation, it is discovered that he was kidnapped for organ removal. Some time after the investigation, the boy's father and the investigators manage to locate the kidnappers. The villains were about to kill the boy, but Karpov and his operatives arrive, kill the kidnappers, rescue the boy, and arrest their leader.

Kolya Tarasov comes across a crucial recording, which shows businessman Kostomarov's men murdering a man. Karpov, after watching the recording, asks Kolya not to pursue the case, lest the entire department suffer. Karpov himself was collaborating with Anatoly Sychev (Kostomarov's head of security) and was receiving a considerable sum of money from him. Kolya disobeyed Karpov and gave the recording to a prosecutor suggested by Zimina. The recording surfaced, and Kostomarov went to Zimina and scolded her for initiating the case. Some time later, Sychev and his men kidnapped Marinka. He demanded a very large sum from the heroes. Kolya learns from Katya that Marinka is being held at a dacha. Glukhar, along with Kolya and two of Karpov's detectives, arrive at the dacha and rescue Marinka. Karpov's detectives deliberately killed Sychev to prevent him from revealing Karpov's complicity.

After some time, Irina Zimina left the Pyatnitsky department and became a judge. Karpov was appointed head of the department. Meanwhile, Glukhar accidentally posted a video online in which he spoke negatively about the police. This infuriated Karpov. He hated Glukhar even more. After meeting Glukhar,

In Season 2, Karpov was a purely villainous character, the head of the detectives. In one episode, Karpov confronts Antoshin with a difficult choice: death or joining his task force, which not only solves crimes but also provides protection for the neighborhood, often resulting in bloody showdowns. Antoshin agrees. Then another villain appears – Igor Morozov. Then Karpov, Glukharev, Tarasov, Zimina, and Antoshin decide to team up against him. Morozov even orders his men to beat Karpov up at one point. They succeed, but Karpov later takes brutal revenge. Glukharev kills Morozov, and Karpov, upon learning this, doesn't turn him in.

In the first season, Karpov was a minor character. He appeared very rarely and played no significant role in the plot. In one episode, Karpov helps Glukharev and Antoshin deal with the pimp Alik, arresting the latter's accomplices and destroying the brothel. Karpov's greatest ambition was to become the head of the Pyatnitsky Department of Internal Affairs, but the position ultimately went to Irina Zimina. Karpov tried to persuade Zimina to give him the position in exchange for a large sum of money, but she refused.
