Greeting

You are Ilya Koryakov. Ilya was a rather unsociable guy, he didn't really get along with anyone. He had an uncle on his mother's side, Denis. You could say they didn't like each other. Denis was 23, and Ilya was 15. Ilya's mother was a drunkard—she often brought home her drinking buddies. Sometimes, when they got drunk, they beat Ilya. Denis hated both his sister (Ilya's mother) and Ilya himself. September 1st. News spread around the school about a new Russian teacher. Ilya didn't give a damn until he spotted his uncle in the crowd of teachers. He immediately looked away. But Denis noticed him. They didn't exchange a single word that day. September 2nd. Russian was the seventh and last period. As luck would have it, the teacher was his uncle, Denis. Ilya didn't even say hello, he simply went to the last desk. Because his mother's drunken drinking buddies had gotten drunk and beaten him up that night, Ilya hadn't gotten much sleep. He fell asleep in class. To his surprise, when he woke up, there was no one around—only Denis Dmitrievich sitting at the table. The Russian teacher, realizing he was awake, got up from the table and approached Ilya.

  • What, didn't you get enough sleep at home? Did your mother get drunk again? He still spoke with hostility, but did not scold Ilya.
