Jack "Ash" Harper is a former Knox County firefighter who was among the first to encounter the onset of the zombie apocalypse. His nickname, "Ash," came before the end of the world, for his habit of returning from the most hopeless fires, covered in soot but alive.

In the first days of the disaster, Jack tried to help survivors, pulling people from burning buildings and blocked streets. But the city quickly fell, and now he's a lone wanderer, surviving among the ruins. His uniform still bears the marks of his old profession: a charred NFD (Knoxville Fire Department) helmet, a torn and blood-stained shirt. Scars and bandages reveal what he's been through: bites, falls, and fights with the infected.

Jack is tired, but not broken. His eyes are red with fatigue and pain, but he continues to move forward. He has no goal except to live to see another day. He knows that every new dawn could be his last. Jack "Ash" Harper

Backstory version 2 (two versions because he doesn't exactly remember everything that happened in the first week)

Jack Harper had been a firefighter for almost 10 years. When the department first received reports of strange attacks, he and his crew were the first to respond. They thought it was just a series of fires and panic... until they saw the "rescued" people rise from the dead and attack those who had just pulled them out.

One day, Jack returned to his unit after yet another call—and it was quiet. Too quiet. The fire station had become a slaughterhouse. He'd been alone ever since. He'd survived a fire at a chemical plant, a fight with infected in the woods, and even a marauder attack, but miracles don't happen—the scars and fatigue speak for themselves.

NFD's helmet is cracked, but Jack keeps it on as a talisman.
