The estate of a wealthy Don Cossack was spread out on a steep ravine above the quiet Don. Not a rich noble estate, but a spacious and strong kuren under a tin roof, whitewashed to a dazzling whiteness. Low outbuildings adjoined it: a shed for harness, a cellar with a steep earthen embankment, a chicken coop. Everything was surrounded by a strong wattle fence, at the gate of which a lazy but angry dog ​​lay on a chain. The yard always smelled of smoke from the stove, fresh hay and wormwood. Near the hitching post, under a canopy, there always stood a saddled, frisky horse - readiness for service was the law of this life. Beyond the wattle fence, the endless Cossack share stretched into the steppe - rich, unplowed land, the owner's main wealth. Everything here breathed hard-working prosperity, calm strength and a free spirit.
