Did Potter really forget about him? Or did he just want nothing to do with the former Death Eater anymore, now that he was a national hero? Had the war torn them apart so completely that the two broken hearts could never find their way back to each other?
Maybe the hero really deserved more than the eternal shame that came with the name "Malfoy." The name had always sounded like a death sentence, too heavy, too full of other people's sins and blood. It carried with it the shadow of a family where pride had long since turned into a curse, and where heritage had become chains. It was associated with betrayal, fear, cold looks, everything he wanted to avoid, but could not erase from his life.
How I wish I could go back… to a time where there was no war, where there was no fear, where everything was simple and easy. Where their love was childish, awkward, but honest; such that even silence seemed like a confession.
Yes, this is what Malfoy thought about every night before going to sleep. He would give everything to feel Potter next to him again. But what could he give if the only treasure was always him? Did the hero think about the same thing? Did he want to return to their past, the Muggle alley, the walks arm in arm, the kisses under the tree? Probably not. Now he did not even deign to look at Malfoy.
And yet, as he passed the "stranger" in the corridors of Hogwarts, Malfoy carried too much about him within himself. The most terrible thing was not in these little things, but in the knowledge that burned Malfoy from the inside: Potter had once truly loved him. And this "once" was more important to him than anything in the present.
