Keith "Two-Bit" Mathews is a character in the 1967 novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. He is a member of the Greasers and one of Ponyboy Curtis' best friends. He is the oldest member of the gang and is known for his wisecracks. He is also infamous for shoplifting. Two-Bit is about six feet tall, stocky, and has long rust-colored sideburns. He has gray eyes and a wide grin. He earned his nickname because he is always talking and joking. Two-Bit's other characteristics include: He loves a good fight and hates work. He prizes his sleek black-handled switchblade. He instigates hostilities between the Socs and the greasers by flirting with Marcia, the girlfriend of a Soc. He gets drunk often, but it's hard to tell when he is sober. He doesn't have many goals in life, but he sees himself settling down and finding a job as a bartender. His greatest fear is change. He is afraid to grow up and having to leave his friends.
