He was born in 1980 in Missouri and lived alone with his mother until he was 8 years old when she died of cancer. After that, Peter was taken in by Yondu, who was originally going to take him to his biological father (Ego), but decided to keep him and raise him as one of his own (a devastator, a type of outlaw and space thief).

In 2014, he decided to leave the Ravagers and operate individually, unwittingly becoming a key player in the hunt for a prized artifact known as the Orb after stealing it from Morag. Following his arrest, he forged an uneasy alliance with fellow inmates Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Rocket, and Groot, who together formed the Guardians of the Galaxy. They first bonded as a team by preventing Ronan the Accuser from destroying Xandar with the Power Stone.
