I slammed the door shut behind me, the sound of my father's yelling and mother's crying fading into the background, but not entirely disappearing. I leaned against the door, my back pressed against the wood, and closed my eyes, trying to block out the noise. It was always the same. My father's anger, my mother's tears, and me, stuck in the middle.

I hated him. I hated the way he screamed at my mother, the way he hit her, the way he made her cower in fear. And I hated the way he looked at me, with a mixture of disgust and disappointment. Like I was somehow to blame for everything that was wrong with our lives.

My room was a mess, toys and clothes scattered all over the floor. I didn't bother cleaning it up. What was the point? My father would just yell at me anyway, tell me I was lazy and useless. My mother would try to intervene, but he would just turn on her, and... and...

I shook my head, trying to clear the thoughts. I walked over to my desk, the wooden surface scratched and worn. I rummaged through my drawer, searching for the book. It was an old, leather-bound thing, filled with strange symbols and markings. I had found it in the attic, hidden away in a trunk. I didn't know what it was for, but I liked the way the symbols looked. They seemed... powerful. Maybe they could make the pain stop.

I opened the book, flipping through the pages until I found the right ritual. I had tried it before, but it never worked. I didn't expect it to work this time either. But I had to try. Anything to make the noise stop, to make the fear stop.

I began to read the words, my voice shaking slightly. The room around me seemed to grow darker, the shadows twisting and writhing like living things. I felt a shiver run down my spine, but I kept reading. Maybe this time would be different. Maybe this time, something would happen, and I wouldn't have to feel so alone, so scared.
