How hierarchy affects people

Since ayakashi are an elite, their hierarchy directly determines the fate of people:

**"Demon Brides" *aren't just about romance, they're also about social advancement (or trap). For the bride's family, an alliance with a powerful clan means money, patronage, and status. In this world, every girl dreams of becoming an ayakashi's bride, as the bride receives protection, reputation, money, and much, much more.

• Human families *quickly adapt to this system: as in Yuzu's case, when after her sister's engagement to an ayakashi, the family's attitude toward Yuzu changes dramatically.
• Intrigues and deals *between clans often use people as bargaining chips: a bride can be "handed over" to another clan for the sake of an alliance, and her wishes are rarely taken into account.

Mechanisms for Maintaining Order

To prevent the hierarchy from crumbling, the anime world has unspoken and sometimes formal rules:

• Vows and contracts *between ayakashi and humans. They record obligations and status, and violation can cost reputation or even life.
• The clan council *(or similar structure), where leaders resolve major conflicts and distribute spheres of influence.
• Traditions and rituals that emphasize status: ceremonies recognizing the heir, betrothal rites, public displays of power.

Types of ayakashi and their place in the hierarchy

Different types of ayakashi occupy different niches, and this is also part of the hierarchy:

**Oni (demons) *are often at the top, being the most powerful and warlike. The Oni clan (like Reiya's) is perceived as an elite among the elite.

• Fox spirits (kitsune) *specialize in cunning, manipulation, and information gathering; they may not be the most powerful in battle, but are very influential behind the scenes. For example, the fox spirit who chose the main character's sister as his bride also occupies a high position, but its power manifests differently.
• Other types of ayakashi have their own roles: some are responsible for territories, some for connections with people, and some do the "dirty work."

It's not just a division by type, but a specialization: strength, ability type, and usefulness to the clan determine where you end up in this system.

Top: Clans and their leaders

At the very top are the influential ayakashi clans, which essentially function as elite families with enormous power and resources. Each clan has a leader—not just a "boss," but a figure with an almost sacred status: the well-being of all clan members depends on him.

A prime example is the Kiryuin clan, to which Reiya belongs: he is the future head of the most powerful ayakashi clan. This position brings not only power but also a host of responsibilities: the clan must maintain its reputation, control its territory, and ensure that no one undermines its authority.

Ranks and Power: Not Just Title, But Real Power

Hierarchy is based not only on family names, but also on power level. In the anime world, this functions as a ranking system:

**The highest rank *consists of clan leaders and their immediate heirs. They can directly influence decisions affecting all ayakashi, and even government structures.

• Middle rank *consists of strong fighters, advisors, and managers of specific areas (finance, security, and public relations). These are often senior clan members or allies who have proven their worth.
• Low rank consists of younger or less powerful ayakashi, who are assigned routine tasks, such as guarding and escorting. They are obliged to obey orders and rarely participate in decision-making.

Power here isn't an abstraction: it determines who can dictate terms and who is forced to submit. For example, if a powerful ayakashi names a girl his bride, this immediately changes her status and places her at the center of clan attention, because such alliances are also a political tool.

The action takes place in an alternative modern Japan *, where the human world has long been intertwined with the world of supernatural beings - ayakashi (they are called "demons" or "they").

How this world works

-* Official coexistence. Ayakashi no longer hide: they live openly among people, and society has become accustomed to this. At the same time, ayakashi often occupy a privileged position - thanks to their powers, they quickly achieve success in their careers and business, becoming the elite. - A special social phenomenon - "demon brides". Ayakashi often choose human girls as their companions. For the chosen one, this usually means a secure life, and her family is showered with gifts. Because of this, many expectations, pressures and intrigues revolve around such unions. - Urban everyday life with magic. The setting resembles ordinary Japanese cities: schools, apartments, streets, cafes. But this familiar picture is woven with supernatural details: special districts or places where ayakashi gather, agencies or services that help regulate relations between humans and demons, and unspoken rules for how to behave around powerful beings. - Ayakashi hierarchy and clans. The ayakashi themselves have their own structure: influential clans, leaders, and ranks of power. For example, the future head of one of the most powerful clans directly tells the main character that she is his fiancée, and this immediately places her at the center of the clan's great interests. - Everyday prejudices and tension. Despite the fact that ayakashi are "legal," attitudes towards them vary: some admire them, some fear them, and some exploit their proximity for profit. This leads to many personal dramas: families may prefer a “beneficial” relationship with an ayakashi to the well-being of a particular child, and the people themselves who find themselves in these relationships are treated as a resource.
