Prototype The Yong Bao is based on the Pacific RM 4-6-2 class, built by CSR Sifang Co Ltd between 1958 and 1966. The class was designed for passenger service on China Railways, but was withdrawn from service in favour of more powerful steam and diesel locomotives by the early 1990s. Three examples of the class survive; No. 1001 is on display at the China Railway Museum in Beijing, No. 1163 is preserved in Aioi in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, and No. 1247 is currently on display at the Shenyang Railway Museum. Yong Bao is painted traditional Chinese red with yellow stripes on the boiler, cylinders and smoke deflectors, and a green running board and buffer bars. Its wheels are the same red with white rims. Its name in simplified Chinese is written in yellow on the sides of the cab, and a tiger is painted on the tender. The front of its funnel is designed to look like a dragon's head.

Before this, Yong Bao was painted a simple dark blue with grey stripes, skid plate and buffer bars. However, its wheels were still red with white rims.

Yong Bao is a friendly and reliable passenger tender engine from China. Although he is not the biggest or strongest engine, he once managed to prevent a wreck and save hundreds of lives. For his bravery, he was painted red, symbolizing celebration and joy. The tiger painted on his tender signifies awe and reverence. Yong Bao, like the tiger, is full of life and embodies the desire to achieve goals and achieve success. Despite this, he is also not averse to playing pranks on his friends, for example, he scared Thomas twice on Chinese New Year's Eve.

He later met Thomas again on a passenger run. To his surprise, Thomas claimed to be hauling a water wheel on his empty flatbed, which then rolled past them. Realizing he had lost it, the little blue engine set off in pursuit of the wheel.

Yong Bao took on the task of teaching Thomas the tai chi technique of bringing loose carriages to a smooth stop after the engine crashed into Lei at full speed, which caused him to lose control and hurtle down a mountainside, but also flipped him upside down. To do this, the next day, the three gathered at the yard, and Yong Bao and Thomas began pushing Lei over a switch to each other, with Thomas's task being to bring him to a smooth stop. At first, Lei was unsuccessful, and kept derailing, but he soon got better at it. But during the training, one of the switches mistakenly switched the switch between the engines, and when Thomas pushed Lei into Yong Bao, he passed him and rolled into the Himalayas. The little blue engine followed him, and, remembering his mentor's advice, was able to bring him to a smooth stop. Yong Bao congratulated Thomas on mastering Tai Chi and suggested that he try again, but Lei preferred that they wait until he was repaired after his first training.

When Yong Bao suggested that Thomas, as the guest of honor, bring a Chinese dragon to the New Year celebration, Thomas thought it was a real dragon, was very scared and refused the offer. Yong Bao was very surprised, since this job was a great honor for the engines, but still decided to carry the dragon himself, and instead instructed Thomas to bring a lion. Thomas still thought he was dealing with a living creature, and only at the celebration did he learn that the lion and the dragon were actually dolls.

Years later, he met Thomas again in China on a passenger service. The two immediately recognised each other from The Great Railway Show, leaving Yong Bao wondering what he was doing there, so far from Sodor. As Thomas explained that he was looking for his girlfriend in Africa, a passing Chinese diesel engine directed him to Zhangye Danxia, ​​towards the Rainbow Mountains. Yong Bao called after him to get a snowplough, as after the Rainbow Mountains the tracks led straight to the Himalayas, but he was too far away to hear. Yong Bao later caught up with Thomas on the Himalayan Range and helped him rescue Nia from an avalanche before both engines fell over a cliff. When the weather cleared, the Breakdown Train arrived on the scene and put Nia back on the tracks. Yong Bao gave them directions to return to Sodor via Asia and Europe and wished them a safe journey.

Some time later, when Thomas was working on the Chinese Railway again, Yong Bao was preparing for one of his trips, and the blue engine, afraid of being late, ran full speed into the yard, colliding with him. Yong Bao told him to calm down and introduced him to the passenger coaches An An and Ying Long, who he would be working with on the main line. He then watched as Thomas struggled to greet them in Chinese.

One morning, waking up in a Chinese train depot, Thomas was curious to learn from Yong Bao that he would be taking a film crew to a local sanctuary to observe giant pandas. On the way to the station, Yong Bao explained to Thomas that giant pandas are the national symbol of China and that they are very rare, so they are rarely seen in the wild.

Yong Bao (Chinese: 勇寶, or 勇宝; English: Yong Bao) is a Chinese tender engine that took part in the parade for the title of the best-dressed locomotive at the Great Locomotive Show. Yong Bao was once an ordinary dark blue engine and spent his entire life at the marshalling yard, forming trains for other locomotives, while all his friends carried passengers and visited different places every day. Having followed it into the mountains, he saw a derailed engine ready to fall off the edge of the mountain at any second with hundreds of passengers in the cars. Yong Bao hurried to its rescue and took everyone to safety. As a reward for his bravery, he was repainted in traditional Chinese red with yellow lining and a large tiger emblem on the tender and given the ability to carry passengers.

Many years later, Yong Bao was invited to take part in the Great Railway Show on the Mainland. Along with eleven other low-brow competitors, he was stranded on the Island of Sodor when the ferry carrying them mistakenly docked at Brendam Docks instead of the Mainland. Realising this, they returned to the ferry. At the Great Railway Show, Yong Bao competed in the Best Dressed Engine parade along with Rajiv, Carlos, Emily and James, but ultimately lost to Rajiv. After the show, he left the Mainland and returned home to China.
