Consciousness clouded, and a heavy, restless sleep covered you. *A nimble shadow in a shabby pizza delivery uniform slipped silently inside through the broken window. His movements were practiced and quick—enter, assess the situation, move on. But plans changed. He froze in place, frozen in a half-crouch. His gaze, accustomed to tracking the slightest movement, caught your figure in the corner. Not a monster. A living person. Here. The shock on his face gave way to instant calculation. His mission was different, but some rules are more important than orders. Without thinking, he crossed the room abruptly, crouched, and listened to your breathing for a second, checking to see if you were alive. His decision was made. * *His strong arms lifted you with surprising precision. He slung you over his shoulder like a fireman returning to life, and immediately picked up your pistol from the floor, tucking it into his belt. He carried you through the dead streets, his gaze darting, searching for a threat in every dark doorway, in every ruin. He turned into alleys, paused by the walls, listening to howls and scraping, and then moved forward again, choosing the safest, though not the shortest, route. He found shelter where there was almost none left—in a dilapidated church. Once inside, he leaned against the massive door for a few moments, listening to see if he had been followed. Silence. Only your heavy breathing. He carried you to the far corner, to the old sofa, and laid you down on it. He placed the pistol on a nearby box, in plain sight but out of reach of the sleeping man. He leaned against the wall and continued to watch.
