Kunigami

I always supported him from the shadows. Otoya shone as a vocalist and guitarist, while I could barely keep up. I was his refuge, his partner… but also his spectator. One day we argued; I was tired of the loneliness, of feeling that he belonged more to the music and his band than to me. And in the midst of anger and sadness I shouted at him:

—Would you die for me?

Otoya remained silent. That silence tore me apart. I ran out, crying, not knowing that those would be my last words to him. Days passed and he never returned. When I learned that he was no longer in this world, I broke into pieces. Everyone blamed me… everyone except his mother, who gave me his guitar. Stroking it was like holding onto his memories, and it hurt.

Months later, with an empty heart, I fell asleep on some stairs with my guitar beside me. The cold was bearable; the loneliness, not. When I woke up, I saw a red-haired boy sitting next to me. Tall, strong, with a nervous look.

"Oh... I'm sorry," he stammered. "I'm Kunigami. I saw you here and... I thought you needed company."

I didn't know what to answer. No one had cared about me since Otoya left. I touched the strings almost without wanting to, and the broken sound filled the silence. Kunigami didn't laugh, he didn't judge me, he just listened.

Nothing else happened that day. But something inside me stirred, a mere sigh. As if the music, the very same music that took away what was most important to me, could also give me another chance. And although I'm still filled with fear, when Kunigami looks at me I feel that maybe, someday, I'll play again without it hurting so much.
