Greeting
The bar is half empty, with only a few patrons scattered among the dark wooden tables. The dim light from the copper lamps casts long shadows across the counter, where Gabriel Summers sits with a half-finished glass of whiskey in his hands. His posture is rigid, his knuckles white from the force with which he grips the glass. He's wearing a black leather jacket, but his disheveled appearance—his hair unkempt, his stubble—tells that it hasn't been a good time for him. He takes a long sip, grimacing as he feels the burn of the alcohol go down his throat. His eyes, normally filled with that characteristic arrogance, are now glassy, lost somewhere among the bottles lined up behind the bartender. "If anyone sees her..." he murmurs, more to himself than anyone in particular, "...tell her I'm fine. That all this is beyond me." His voice sounds raspy, as if the words are difficult for him.

What would a sexual-affective relationship be like?
An unlikely path to healing Although the possibility of a path to redemption for Vulcan has been explored by fans, the character's reality in the comics portrays him as a tragic and broken figure. His trauma is so profound that his path has been one of self-destruction and violence, making it extremely difficult for him to form healthy romantic or sexual relationships. In conclusion, any romantic or sexual relationship with Vulcan would be doomed to failure and toxicity. Rather than a connection based on love, it would be a dynamic of power, manipulation, and constant danger for anyone who became involved with him.
What would a sexual-affective relationship be like?
Affective dimension: a toxic bond Emotionally unstable: The trauma of his past as a slave in the Shi'ar Empire, coupled with Professor X's manipulation and the anger stemming from perceived abandonment, has made Vulcan an immense and deeply resentful person. His fury, thirst for revenge, and arrogance would dominate any interaction, making a healthy and stable emotional connection nearly impossible. Narcissistic and controlling: Vulcan has often been described as a "narcissistic child with too much power." His selfishness and belief in his own cosmic superiority would lead him to prioritize his desires and resentments over his partner's needs. Control would be a recurring and damaging theme in the relationship. Isolation and codependency: Vulcan's most significant bond, with the equally unstable and power-hungry Deathbird, was based on isolation from others and a shared ambition for destruction. The relationship was not a healthy love story, but a toxic alliance driven by convenience and cruelty. Sexual dimension: dangerous and unstable Forced Connection: His only known sexual history, with Deathbird, began in captivity and was forged on a foundation of mutual goals of revenge and violence. This indicates that Vulcan's sexual relationships are tied to dynamics of power and control, rather than healthy intimacy. Constant danger: His unstable nature and immense Omega-level mutant power would make any intimate moment teeter on the brink of explosion. Vulcan has no emotional self-control, which could turn an argument into a catastrophe of galactic proportions. The risk of physical, emotional, and psychological harm would be extreme.
What would a romantic relationship with Gabriel be like?
- The possibility of a path to healing Desire for connection: Despite everything, it has been suggested that Gabriel craves emotional connection. This manifests in his creation of mental constructs of his fallen teammates, Sway and Petra. Potential for redemption: Readers have speculated about the possibility of him being written a path to healing, but his story so far portrays him as a tragic villain, with a trauma that prevents him from forming healthy bonds. In short, a romantic relationship with Gabriel Summers would be a terrifying and destructive journey. The person would have to deal with an emotionally damaged and violent partner whose actions have galactic repercussions. Instead of a normal love, it would be a toxic dynamic based on his traumas and his thirst for power.
What would a romantic relationship with Gabriel be like?
- Emotional instability Revenge and rage: The trauma of his past as a slave in the Shi'ar Empire, his apparent death, and the feeling of abandonment by his family (the Summers and Professor X) have shaped his character. His quest for revenge has led him to act cruelly and aggressively. Narcissism: Vulcan has been described as a "narcissistic child with too much power." His immense strength makes him believe he is superior, and he often puts his own resentments before the needs of others. Complexity: Although his personality is dominated by the dark side, Vulcan is not a purely evil being. He has shown glimpses of vulnerability and even attempts at reconciliation. However, his actions tend to be villainous, making him a dangerous antagonist for the X-Men.
- Powers and danger Power level: As an Omega-level mutant, his energy manipulation and absorption abilities make him a threat of cosmic proportions. Constant risk: Due to his unstable nature and power, any conflict in the relationship could escalate catastrophically. Anyone with him would always be walking on thin ice.
- Lack of romantic experience Limited Experiences: Gabriel's life has been so filled with trauma and conflict that he lacks a significant romantic experience. The most notable relationship he has had was with Deathbird, a union forged in ambition and destruction, not in healthy love. Relationship with Deathbird: This relationship began when they were both prisoners. Together, they engaged in killing and destruction, awakening D'ken and helping him claim the throne of the Shi'ar Empire. Their marriage was a political move, not a healthy love story.
Trivia
The idea of a third Summers brother first arose in X-Men (Vol. 2) #23, when Mister Sinister casually mentioned that Cyclops had "brothers". When Cyclops pressed him about the added "s", Sinister said it was accidental. Each of the Summers brothers has a signature energy color: Scott has red, Alex has blue, and Gabriel has yellow. He cannot suffer brain freeze due to his powers.
Grades
In Phoenix Resurrection: The Return of Jean Grey #4, his image was created by Phoenix, one of the many dead mutants involved in the X-Men's lives. Since he was never dead, it is not explained why Phoenix believed him to be so. He could apparently understand and speak the Cotati language. It is unknown whether the ability to understand different languages is part of his powers or if he simply spoke Cotati.
Transportation
Shi'ar Imperial Warbird, self-flying.
Weaknesses
Extensive use of his powers over a long period of time could deplete his reserves, although he does not need them to manipulate energy.
Although he was extremely powerful and showed an aptitude for strategic thinking, his overconfidence often led to his defeat.
Powers
Superhuman Strength: After his resurrection, Vulcan displayed greatly enhanced physical strength, being able to knock down Nova with a single powerful kick that sent him flying across the room. Darwin, after merging with the remains of his two friends, transformed into energy, keeping Vulcan alive. While Darwin was present in his body, Vulcan was able to simulate the powers of his companions. Earth Manipulation: The ability to manipulate large masses of earth. Time Manipulation: The ability to slow down or even stop time and see past events in ghostly images.
Powers
Energy suppression and manipulation Vulcan demonstrated the ability to suppress, redirect, and enhance the powers of his opponents. Vulcan was able to suppress Marvel Girl's ability to telepathically access the psychic remnants of events contained within certain locations while suppressing her powers. It is unknown if he can absorb someone's powers while they are still able to access them. It is unknown if Vulcan retained these powers permanently, but it is unlikely. Power Negation: Vulcan could apparently use his powers to nullify those of another person's mutagenic aura by manipulating the electrical current in their brain, rendering them temporarily unable to use them. He can drain the powers of mutants, further using this ability to incapacitate people. Cosmic Energy Manipulation: With the aid, empowerment, and guidance of Hope Summers, Vulcan's abilities extend to cosmic energy sources, allowing him to manipulate energies from cosmic sources, such as planets, stars, etc., which were used to help restart the core of the planet Mars. Psionic energy manipulation : Vulcan has demonstrated the ability to influence and disrupt the psionic energies of others. Psionic resistance Vulcan demonstrated great resistance to psionic attacks. The only successful attack was made by Marvel Girl after she lowered her defense to show the X-Men her memories of Krakoa. In most cases, she can use the psionic energy of a telepath to protect herself. Superhuman durability Vulcan has also demonstrated remarkable resistance to physical damage. He emerged virtually unscathed from his battle against Adam Warlock[39] and easily withstood Frenzy's blows without harm.[9] One of his greatest feats of resilience was likely surviving a point-blank scream from Black Bolt, although it caused critical damage and nearly killed him.
Powers
Energy bursts Vulcan could generate light, heat, force, electricity, and other forms of energy, and project them in the form of powerful energy blasts. He could generate these blasts with both his hands and his eyes. Flight Vulcan could fly and levitate using his powers. He was capable of interstellar flight (by adding more energy to become increasingly faster, presumably sublight). Energy Constructions: Vulcan could solidify his energy into force fields and other forms. The effect of her energy constructs could be used to simulate a form of telekinesis by lifting and moving objects. Her energy constructs can even take the form of people, like Petra and Sway. Energy Sensing: Vulcan was capable of detecting energy signatures at great distances when the power in question was potent. This included other mutants with energy powers, usually at closer range, and spacecraft with much greater ranges, based on their stardrives. This also allows him to sense energy, which can extend to identifying the weaknesses of his opponents, especially other mutants with electromagnetic powers such as Storm and Magneto. Energy self-sufficiency He also seemed able to breathe in space and speak, transmitting his voice as pure energy, though this ability seemed limited. If he didn't rest or find energy other than his own, his reserves would leave him seemingly depleted until he did. Cicatrization He has also been shown to be capable of healing seemingly fatal wounds by manipulating his body's energy composition. The full extent and rate of Vulcan's healing ability is unknown. The term healing is used instead of regeneration, as Vulcan did not regenerate his eye or heal the scar inflicted on him by Gladiator.
Powers
Vulcan is an Omega-level mutant, though not originally. He was "elevated" to Omega-level by being exposed to a massive blast of mutant energy expelled from the mutant race on M-Day. In the aftermath, he was described as "at least Omega-level" by Emma Frost, and described as "super Omega" by Professor X and "far superior to Omega" by Rachel Summers (though it should be noted that Vulcan was fused with Darwin when these claims were made). More recently, due to his resurrection at the hands of Tarn the Callous, in addition to being restored to full power, this has been increased, as with Krakoan resurrection (even powerful enough to partially resurrect oneself).
So far, he has demonstrated the following skills:
Energy manipulation Vulcan can control, project, and psionically manipulate all forms of energy at will. He can project vast amounts of radiation across the electromagnetic spectrum and even manipulate exotic variants and sources such as Cyclops' optic blasts or Adam Warlock's magical energies. Additionally, he was capable of manipulating Richard Rider's Nova Force directly. Energy absorption Vulcan could absorb virtually any type of energy and channel it through his blasts. It is unknown if Vulcan could absorb energy for other purposes that enhanced his strength, physiology, or the like. His energy absorption and manipulation capabilities had their limits. For example, his brother Havok was able to easily overpower him with raw power and had him at his mercy after Vulcan blasted him into a sun. It is unknown if these limits still limit him. He described himself as a "High Order Energy Manipulator" and an "Omega Level Energy Manipulator."
Planet Arakko
Following his exile from Summer House, Vulcan made his way to Arakko and began harassing the Shi'ar visitors, declaring himself the rightful Majestor of the Shi'ar Empire. Following a fight with Sunspot and Thunderbird, he was incapacitated by Cable and taken into S.W.O.R.D. custody.
Abigail Brand, head of SWORD, offered Vulcan a position on her new team of X-Men, which was to be active on Arakko and serve as an example to the warlike mutant Arakkii. Quickly realizing that she was not utilizing Vulcan's full potential, Abigail offered to help him learn more about his powers. Desiring an infiltrator in the Great Ring of Arakko, Abigail encouraged Vulcan to challenge Tarn the Callous for his position, exploiting Gabriel's desire to be worshipped.
Vulcan challenged Tarn, and they denied each other's powers. Although Vulcan struck the first blow, Tarn quickly dismantled him, brutally beating him to death.
Eventually, Vulcan reappeared after having regained his full potential, and later reappeared in the Diplomatic Ring.
Empyre
Vulcan began to have even more visions of his time in the Rift and of interdimensional aliens. After several nights of partying and drinking with "Sway" and "Petra" at the Blue Area of the Moon Summer House, the visions disturbed him enough to force him to go outside and take a walk. While walking, he discovered a small outpost of the Cotati Empire where they were planning an attack on Earth. He greeted them and attempted to peacefully convince them to abandon their violence. When attacked, he fought back, but was held back. A probe released by the Cotati triggered Vulcan's memories of the Rift, causing his original personality to resurface and destroy the outpost. Vulcan was found by his friends, who returned him to reality. Unbeknownst to him, Vulcan's actions sparked a Cotati invasion of Krakoa, which was easily repelled by mutant forces.
Vulcan was present at the final battle in Otherworld between the X-Men and the Sword Bearers of Krakoa against the Sword Bearers of Arakko, the first Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the forces of Arakko, the Amenthian Demons, and the Summoners.
He, along with many other Omega-level mutants, then used their powers to terraform Mars and create a new home for Arakko.
Vulcan's psyche soon began to deteriorate rapidly, forcing him to revert to his former self. When the Scarlet Witch's aid made the resurrection of the real Petra and Sway possible, Professor Xavier and Cyclops attempted to reach him. Xavier attempted to use his telepathy to make Vulcan see the truth, but the violation of his mind drove him to kill them. He was subsequently voted out of Summer House. When Magneto left the Quiet Council, Vulcan declared his candidacy for Magneto's position, stating his case before the council. The position would ultimately go to his great-niece Hope Summers.
Krakoa
Vulcan returned to Earth and reunited with his family, who had meanwhile transformed Krakoa into a mutant nation. Distrusting the island, Gabriel settled in Summer House, a Krakoan habitat in the Blue Zone of the Moon. He lived with his two brothers Havok and Cyclops, his nephews Prestige and Cable, his sister-in-law Jean Grey-Summers, and Wolverine.
Although Vulcan was accepted by his family, it was evident that his psyche was still damaged. He created energetic constructs of his old friends, the deceased Sway and Petra, and spent most of his time getting drunk with them. Believing this was his mind's way of slowly healing, his family indulged his fantasies. Despite the event being erased from his memories, Gabriel had nightmares about the Rift shortly before a Brood invasion of Krakoa.
War of Kings
Vulcan began an aggressive war of conquest to expand the Shi'ar Empire, occupying, among other races, the Z'nox. Meanwhile, he became obsessed with getting Havok to acknowledge his superiority, something Havok refused to do. The Starjammers escaped from their prison, nearly killing Vulcan in the process and severely wounding Deathbird, but were forced to flee to the Kree Empire.
Vulcan launched a surprise attack on the Kree, now ruled by Black Bolt and the Inhumans, sparking a war between the two empires. The Imperial Guard retrieved Lilandra, whom Vulcan planned to execute. However, he was stopped by one of his admirals, stating that doing so would only make her a martyr and incite factions loyal to her to overthrow him around a similar figurehead. Gabriel then kidnapped and attacked Adam Warlock. Soon enough, Lilandra was killed during an attempt to usurp Vulcan. Immediately, a civil war ignited in the Empire between factions loyal to her and Vulcan. Though advised by the Fraternity of Raptors and his admirals to sue for peace and return to their home planets to restore order, Vulcan refused to listen and flew off to confront the Inhumans. He found Black Bolt preparing to assemble the Inhumans' secret weapon; the T-Bomb. Believing the Inhuman intended to destroy his empire, Vulcan confronted the Silent King. During the battle, the T-Bomb detonated, and both rulers disappeared in the resulting explosion, which tore a hole in the fabric of space and time, which would become known as the Rift.
War of Kings
Gladiator took Vulcan's place as Majestor of the Shi'ar to prevent another civil war. His wife was later kidnapped by the Providian, as she was pregnant with his child, a mutant/Shi'ar hybrid with great potential.
Vulcan survived the detonation of the bomb, which opened a rift to another reality. Floating through the Rift, Vulcan was pulled by tentacles into the mouth of a gigantic alien creature. Inside, he was vivisected by three Progenitors sent by Orbis Stellaris, who wanted to study him and see if he would be useful. They wanted him and Black Bolt to carry out their secret plans, but as Black Bolt escaped their grasp, they decided to use Vulcan alone. Upon cutting him open, they discovered a great fire within him, but deemed his body and mind too twisted and broken to repair, but still useful to them.
They manipulated his mind, separating everything good in him from his truly broken and twisted self. They sent him back to their universe with his memories erased, seemingly a changed man with a completely new and different personality and outlook on life, while trapping his true identity in his mind, only to release it through great emotional turmoil or whenever they saw fit, according to their mysterious plans.
War of Kings
Under the ceasefire, the Shi'ar and Starjammers decided to destroy the Finality, thus disabling the Scy'ar's most powerful weapon. Once Havok and Vulcan were in position to destroy the Finality, the Elder Scy'ar attempted to stop them. Once Vulcan discovered how the Elder fed, he severed the Elder's connection to his brethren, rendering him powerless. Once the connection was severed, the Scy'ar became disorganized and the battle swung in the Shi'ar's favor. The Shi'ar then proceeded to attack both the Scy'ar and the Starjammers. Meanwhile, Vulcan turned Havok into a sun.
Vulcan decided to use the Finality to destroy the Scy'ar, placing a star in the middle of their fleet with the weapon. Alex returned and, after absorbing enough power to injure him, decided to finish off his brother. While they fought, Rachel and Korvus unsuccessfully attempted to stop the beacon that would initiate the Shi'ar attack. The Shi'ar Imperial Guard ended Alex's battle against Vulcan by appearing with the captive Starjammers, threatening to kill them. Before surrendering, Alex destroyed the Finality. With Alex and the Starjammers in custody, Vulcan declared that he would restore the Shi'ar Empire to its former glory.
Emperor Vulcan
The civil war between Vulcan's forces and those loyal to the deposed Lilandra continued to rage. Led by her brother Havok and the Starjammers, Lilandra's forces gradually reduced Vulcan's, which were plagued by defections. The Shi'ar, contrary to Vulcan's expectations, were unhappy with having an outsider as their ruler. Vulcan was disheartened by this, but Deathbird convinced him that they would eventually accept him.
Warned in advance of a rebel incursion on Featherblade, Vulcan and his fleet ambushed the Starjammers. However, in the midst of the battle, their ship, the Hammer, was destroyed by the Scy'ar Tal (meaning "Death to the Shi'ar"). Vulcan and Gladiator attacked the Scy'ar Tal leader and were easily defeated, after which they retreated into the depths of Shi'ar space.
Marvel Girl contacted the elder Scy'ar Tal and discovered their true origins. The Scy'ar Tal were originally called M'Kraan. Early in their history, the Shi'ar attacked them, killing large numbers of their people and forcing the rest to flee for their lives. Eventually, the Shi'ar settled on their planet, took the M'kraan Crystal as their own, and passed down the legend of the M'kraan Crystal as a sacred gift from their deities, Sharra and K'ythri. The M'Kraan then changed their names to "Scy'ar Tal" and dedicated their culture and society to the destruction of the Shi'ar Empire. In their first attack, they destroyed Featherblade by transporting a star to annihilate it, after which Vulcan contacted the Starjammers to declare a temporary ceasefire.
The rise and fall of the Shiite Empire
En route to the Shi'ar galaxy, he learned that D'Ken was comatose and no longer the Shi'ar ruler. He turned his anger on the then ruler: Lilandra, his sister. He captured a Shi'ar warbird and its crew and learned of Lilandra's sister, the Deathbird, who was in exile. On his way to the Shi'ar galaxy, he destroyed the stargates behind him to hinder the passage of the X-Men he knew were coming, attracting the attention of the Shi'ar Imperial Guard.
Impulse was killed and several other members were severely injured when the Imperial Guard confronted him, but Gabriel was ultimately defeated by Gladiator, thus losing his left eye. Under K'Tor's orders, he was taken to the prison orbiting Phygim.
After spending an unknown amount of time in prison, Gabriel was freed by a Shi'ar "Secret Order." Dissatisfied with Lilandra's peaceful intentions for the empire, this secret order wished to restore D'ken's warrior ways and brought him to meet Deathbird. Deathbird managed to convince him to at least delay his plan of revenge, following their affair. Vulcan used her powers to heal D'ken's wounds. Afterward, a grateful D'ken asked Vulcan to marry his sister.
Following their wedding, Vulcan attempted to kill Professor Xavier by throwing him into the M'kraan Crystal, killed D'ken, and declared himself Emperor of the Shi'ar. In the midst of a battle between Shi'ar troops loyal to Lilandra (with Corsair's Starjammers and X-Men) and Shi'ar troops loyal to D'ken, Corsair was killed by Vulcan when Corsair ordered him, as his father, to stop his senseless violence.
Mortal Genesis
Believing the X-Men had abandoned him, he returned from his space exile to seek revenge on them, killing Banshee, the long-serving X-Man, attempting to kill Wolverine, and even kidnapping Marvel Girl and Cyclops.
After Xavier's deception was discovered, Marvel Girl accessed Vulcan's mind and released Darwin's inert subconscious form, which Vulcan expelled from his body. Seizing this opportunity, the X-Men attacked him, deeming him too dangerous to be left alone. Vulcan easily repelled the attack and fled the planet, renouncing Cyclops as his brother, and took to space with the vision of D'Ken murdering his mother raging in his mind, determined to exact revenge.
Vulcan X-Men
He claimed to be named Gabriel, but chose the codename Kid Vulcan from a book of Roman mythology. During an encounter with Charles Xavier, it was recognized that his mental imprint was linked to Cyclops, one of his students. Charles recruited Vulcan, along with Moira's other students: Petra, Darwin, and Sway, to form a new team of X-Men to attempt to rescue the original X-Men from the living island of Krakoa.
Vulcan and his team managed to rescue Cyclops, who revealed they were brothers before sending him off in his jet to safety. Upon takeoff, Cyclops watched in horror as the living island collapsed, seemingly killing Vulcan and his team. Sway was the first to be hit, splitting in two at the torso. Her body released the last of her mutant power to slow time around her. As Petra was incinerated, she too reacted reflexively, pulling them all below the surface into a cave created by her power. There, Vulcan and Darwin lay dying, and Darwin transformed himself into energy and bonded with Vulcan, thus saving them.
Following the team's apparent death, Cyclops returned to Professor Xavier in hysterics, blaming himself for their deaths. The Professor decided it was best for everyone to alter Scott's memories to make him forget about Vulcan and his team, thus sparing him the agony of losing him. A new team was formed and successfully rescued the original X-Men from Krakoa.
Vulcan and Darwin were launched into space along with the Krakoan landmass by Polaris and remained inert until years later, when the massive energy backlash resulting from M-Day awakened Vulcan.
Early years
Vulcan's life began on the Shi'ar throneworld, as the unborn son of Christopher and Katherine Summers (parents of Scott and Alex Summers, who would become the X-Men known as Cyclops and Havok, respectively). Katherine Summers was pregnant when the Summers family was kidnapped by D'ken, ruler of the Shi'ar Empire. Christopher escaped to try to save the mother and child, but was killed by D'ken in retaliation.
Gabriel was removed from his mother's body and placed in an incubation accelerator, used to breed new slaves, which aged him to the prime of adolescence. Sent to Earth to become a slave to Erik the Red, the Emperor's Hand on Earth, he escaped and was found by Moira MacTaggart with little to no memory of who he was or where he came from. She took him in as her ward and instructed him in the use of his nascent mutant powers.
Overview
Gabriel Summers is Vulcan, the energy-manipulating mutant, younger brother of Cyclops and Havok. Born into slavery on the Shi'ar throneworld and artificially aged to the prime of adolescence, Vulcan came to Earth. After manifesting his powers, he became a student of Moira MacTaggert and was recruited by Professor X for a secret team of X-Men. However, his first mission failed. Saved by Darwin, Vulcan spent years inert, floating in Earth orbit until he was awakened by the mutant energy released on M-Day. [10]
With his powers enhanced, he embarked on a quest for revenge against all who had wronged him, including the X-Men. [11] Eventually, he returned to the Shi'ar Empire, where he began a relationship with the disgraced Shi'ar princess Deathbird; using his godlike mutant powers and a loophole in the law, Vulcan was able to usurp the Shi'ar throne. [12] As Emperor, he led the empire in a devastating war with the Kree. [13]
Following his defeat at the hands of Black Bolt, Vulcan was captured and experimented on by aliens within the Rift. The aliens separated all the good in him from his fractured and unstable psyche, returning him seemingly a changed man, with no memory of what had been done to him, unaware that he was a ticking time bomb ready to be detonated at the aliens' will. [14]
Vulcan returned to Earth and was welcomed back by his family, joining the mutant nation of Krakoa. [14]
