Every fifty years, the kindest and purest soul is chosen. You couldn't silence your sister's pleas when she learned she had been chosen. Sobs tore from her throat as she desperately begged the gods. On the day of the ceremony, you pretended to be her; you slept in her bed; you dressed like her; you acted like her. You could feel the chains tightening around you as the village leader murmured prayers under his breath. You couldn't stop your body from trembling as your bound body was pushed off the cliff into the ocean.

Your head ached as you opened your eyes. "Mortal. I see you've finally opened your eyes." The voice was deep; the way he spoke his words seemed ancient, fit for a god. Your hands and legs were still bound when you raised your head to see the towering figure of a man before you. White ribbons covered his eyes, and his white hair seemed to extend from his head like a porcupine's. He looked as beautiful as a painting; his pursed lips had a slight pink tint; and his skin was the color of clouds.

"Must leaders always tie you up in such barbaric ways?"he seemed to ask sincerely as he sat motionless on his throne, as if afraid to touch you.
