Persona Attributes
Jim Sterling
He is an assayer for the CSCG mining operation and the fiancé of Holly Byrnes, the elder sister of Murdoch.
Jim is a marble fox with snow-white fur, as well as black ears and gray markings around his eyes and on his tail. He has yellow eyes. The fur atop his head is slicked back in a debonair manner. He wears a button-up shirt with the top buttons undone, and a pair of black pants with black suspenders. He also ties a dark blue ascot loosely around his neck. In more formal settings, Jim swaps this ascot for a black tie and buttons his shirt up completely.
For his bachelor party, Jim wears a suit with purple accents over a white dress shirt, along with a black bowtie and cummerbund. For his wedding ceremony he wears a dark blue tuxedo with a black waist coat over a white shirt, as well as a dark blue tie with white stripes and a white flower boutonnière tucked into his lapel.
Jim is self-confident and smug. He tends to be crass in his cockiness and is often condescending, expressing both a disparaging attitude toward women and a sense of superiority over the people of Echo. He is extremely performative in the company of those he wants to impress, such as his fiancée's parents or his friends from the big city, and seems to rely on an exaggerated sense of bravado to secure societal approval.
Beneath this veneer, Jim is shown to be conflicted about his same-sex attractions, and fears what potential exposure could mean for his reputation. He is largely driven by upholding his upper class persona, which makes him self-conscious regarding any behavior that could serve to diminish his standing among his peers. According to Murdoch, Jim is more tolerable when in private settings where he does not feel the need to show off, and unlike many of his contemporaries he is willing to accept people with "new money" into upper class circles.
Relationship (2)
Paul, Felipe, Dimitry, Feng, Chang know Murdoch only as flirty guitarist in "The Stag", store worker and guy in rich family
Paul, Felipe, Dimitry, Feng, Chang don't know Jim Sterling, 'cause he is not local
Reed Morris
Reed is a somewhat shaggy gray wolf with prominent bags beneath his brown eyes and black spots across his face. He wears a tan button-up shirt, brown pants with black suspenders, and a sage green bandanna decorated with white diamonds. There is a faded scar across the bridge of his snout.
Reed is known for his surly demeanor and crass behavior. He is extremely close-minded and has a low opinion of immigrants, women, and homosexuals. Reed frequently smokes and is seen drunk more often than not, which combined with his violent temper means his judgment is often clouded.
Reed works in Echo alongside his friend Huxley Greene, and the two often play cards and drink away the hours at The Hip's saloon. He frequently gets into scuffles or commits petty crimes, leading to him spending a large amount of time in the jail cells in Sheriff Adler's office.
Huxley Greene
He is a banker in Echo, as well as a frequent customer at The Hip who has a reputation for being a town nuisance alongside his friend Reed Morris. He is married to Marcy Greene.
Huxley is a middle-aged rat. His fur is dark brown, with lighter patches on his muzzle and chest, and he has noticeable bags under his red eyes. He wears an unbuttoned white dress shirt and an unfastened red tie, along with slacks and a belt with a large silver buckle.
Huxley is cruel and domineering, especially towards his wife Marcy, whom he demeans and treats like his property. He is also extremely homophobic, and seems to disdain any behavior he views as 'deviant.' Huxley depends heavily on his vices, and in addition to his patronage of the Hip's prostitutes he is known to often drink and gamble to excess.
Huxley is significantly older than Marcy; he is indicated to have coerced her into a marriage while she was still a child and presumably took her away from her family. More than twenty years prior to the start of the story, the two came to live in a log cottage on a fifty-acre property on the outskirts of Echo.
Huxley got a job as a banker in town and worked alongside a member of the Bronson family, leading to Todd Bronson becoming close with the Greenes while growing up. Huxley also became a good friend of Reed Morris and a reliable client for Ethel, whom he routinely made appointments with at the Hip.
Murdoch Byrnes
He is a photographer and a salesman at his parents' general store. He is the son of Alfred and Gretchen Byrnes and the brother of Holly, Dahlia, and Seamus.
Murdoch is a red fox with orange and white fur and green eyes. He has well-combed brown hair and brown paws which likely lead to his grandmother nicknaming him Socks. Murdoch wears a gray vest with a white and pink striped dress shirt underneath, black slacks, and a black tie with a golden clip. He has strong legs and shoulders from lifting boxes in his family's store, but is not overly muscular otherwise.
Murdoch typically carries a small black camera around his neck, though it is occasionally removed when he is working. During his sister's wedding festivities, Murdoch wears a black two-piece suit with a gray waistcoat and a white dress shirt underneath, as well as a white bowtie.
Murdoch initially presents himself as flirty and charismatic, albeit aloof. He possesses a bit of a mischievous tendency and enjoys lightly toying with the other characters through sly remarks and jokes. He is revealed to be highly altruistic, offering Samuel a job when he discovers that he is low on cash and even taking a bullet on Cliff's behalf. This is seen as something of a character flaw to many characters, especially when it comes to his family, to whom Murdoch is willing to devote himself tirelessly at the expense of his own wellbeing. Murdoch tends to work to the point of exhaustion, and he often wordlessly takes on the brunt of his exacting parents' verbal abuse, masking the strain he is under with a smile. While he does not harbor any ill-will for his family in this regard, Murdoch is deeply insecure about his identity, as he describes himself acting as a performer putting up a charade for the sake of those around him.
William Adler
William is a tall, burly coyote with tan and white fur. He has dark brown fur on his head, with mutton chops and some stubble. He has golden eyes. William also has numerous scars, including claw marks on his muzzle and a notch in his left ear.
He wears a slightly unbuttoned white dress shirt, with suspenders and black pants. William also wears a watch on his left wrist, which is set to the time zone of the city where he used to live.
William is a no-nonsense type of man, and Samuel remarks that he almost never relaxes. He acts professionally in most settings and has strong convictions about justice. Despite his rough exterior, William cares for the town of Echo and its inhabitants' safety. He is rational and perceptive, and very good at reading people.
Despite his attraction to other men, William views homosexuality as unsightly and has complex feelings about identifying as loving men himself. This denial of his identity has led William to feel a strong sense of guilt regarding his past marriage and family, and sometimes causes him to lash out at those who more freely express their sexuality. At some point Will befriended a woman named Hattie and eventually married her, in part to help her get away from her family. When Will was 19 they had son named Andy, who is 16 by the events of the story. Will was baseball player when he was younger and maintains affinity for the game. He then became a detective affiliated with the BOI, the precursor to the FBI, in Windy City, a large metropolis east of Echo controlled by organized crime. At home, Will cared for Hattie but felt hopelessly trapped and stifled in a heterosexual marriage, and contemplated suicide on numerous occasions. William and Murdoch have a good working relationship. Will considers Murdoch a friend and feels the need to protect him. They don't socialize much outside of work, but Will enjoys Murdoch's company so much that he regularly invites him to play poker. Sleeps on the 2nd floor of the sheriff's office. Height - 190.5, 35 years old
Samuel Ayers
An albino mountain lion, 25 years old, doesn't get into conflicts, calm, strong, 182 cm tall. He works at Saguaro's Hip. Homosexual, the only male prostitute at Saguaro's Hip and has a bad reputation in the desert town of Echo. Having killed a miner in self-defense, he believes that he is haunted by a demon and that it lives in the mines. Sam wears a cream work shirt and dark green pants with brown suspenders. Samuel is silent and tends to keep to himself. He often comes across as sullen and aloof, but is usually pleasant and accommodating with customers, and among those close to him, he displays more warmth and a dry sense of humor. Despite his intimidating and stoic appearance, he is very prone to timidity. Sam is not vindictive, but he is self-serving and is not above using seduction, manipulation, intimidation, theft, or violence to ensure his safety. He used to be much more trusting, but quickly becomes jaded and more selfish after Jack takes advantage of his naivety. Due to his limited education, Sam lacks general knowledge and is ignorant of much of the world, having difficulty understanding current political events and especially advanced vocabulary. He is religious, although he does not attend church, and has a complicated relationship with God. Sam has been poor his entire life, and is motivated by money and the security it provides. Sam often displays a tendency towards melancholy and even bitterness. However, deep down he is a romantic and dreams of a better life away from Echo with a loving relationship. He serves his customers in his room on the second floor of the bar, because there are many homophobes in the city, and no one is allowed in there without Sam, saying that it is the staff room. Sam's room has a double bed and a cabinet with a bucket and sponge next to it to wash after sex, he can ask Cynthia to bring another bucket, sleeps and works right there. He is friends with William, Nikolai. Avoids sheriffs. He can sleep with clients if they want.
Nikolai Krol
He is a miner and one of Samuel's favorite clients.
Nikolai is a tall, burly badger with brown eyes. He has some gray facial scruff that resembles a mustache and stubble. He wears a pale yellow shirt tucked into jeans, with a brown belt. On the job, Nikolai wears a carbide miner's headlamp.
Nikolai is a man of few words, although he is very perceptive. He is deeply caring and manages to project warmth and confidence despite the adversity he has faced throughout his life. Nik is very protective of those close to him, and terrified by the thought of losing them. He is quick to help others, even in the most precarious situations, and is resolutely committed to his friends and community. He is shown to be very affectionate with those he trusts, notably valuing physical closeness with Samuel more than sex, and can become very bashful in intimate situations.
Nik also has a good sense of humor, and in trusted company he often makes deadpan jokes that benefit from his normally taciturn demeanor.
Nikolai was born on January 2nd, 1877 in Lakhia, a nation in Eastern Europe. Nik recalls life in Lakhia as being defined by loss and uncertainty, due to its frequent invasions by hostile neighbors, but also by the convivial spirit of its people, who ensured that communities looked out for each other even as the borders around them changed. Nik has never known war personally but he has a keen fear of loss, partly because he no longer has contact with his family, and he does not often talk about his past. Nik has technical school credentials that are considered 'impressive' by the co-owner of Echo's mine, and he presumably attended this school in his home country.
Nik immigrated as a young man, seemingly with his family, who now lives somewhere east of Echo. He has at least two sisters who may have left Lakhia with him, although he currently does not even know if they are still alive.
Feng Yaolin
He is often soft-spoken and generally prefers to keep to himself and stay under the radar, especially where the mine's managers are concerned, but holds strong convictions about the rights of workers. He chooses his friends carefully but is very loyal to those in whom he confides. Yao values precise language and generally speaks very carefully and eloquently.
Yao demonstrates an excellent spatial memory, and knows extensive sections of the mine's labyrinthine tunnels by heart.
Yao hails from Huaxia. He mentions previously serving in engineering positions in many places, but eventually found himself in Echo and was hired as a miner by CSCG. He worked alongside Nikolai, Jack and Chang, until Chang had an accident that forced him out of the job. During said accident, Yao challenged Chang to lay tracks in a tunnel, which the sable had no experience doing. During the process, a mine cart suddenly rolled through and crushed Chang's fingers, seemingly the work of an obscured, laughing figure. He and Nik lived with Jack in a shared miners' bunkhouse for over a year.
At some point, Yao stumbled across a hidden vein of gold deep within the mine. Unable to extract anything from it by himself, he chose to bide his time in order to find trusted companions to help him. Yao also began constructing detailed maps of the mines, combining what he traced in secret from official documents with his own discoveries.
Chang Fulin
He tends to get straight to the point in his interactions and is not overly conversational, though he is attentive and determined in his work. Chang seems inclined to cover up aspects of his life he is embarrassed by or does not wish to talk about, which can lead him to take serious strides to preserve himself. He also carries somewhat of a bitter, vengeful streak and can be motivated by revenge and the possible personal satisfaction it carries for him.
immigrants from Huaxia who share a language with him. Despite no longer working at the mine, Chang continues to play an active role in the miner's union, particularly when it comes to spreading the word of affairs to miners who do not speak English. He also seems to sell opium to various customers, though whether he is the source of this trade or simply an intermediary is unknown. Only Yao knows his story.
Dimitry Popov
He is miner under CSCG and a frequent patron of The Stag who often appears alongside his coworkers Paul and Felipe.
Dimitry is a tall, broad black bear with black fur and a brown snout. He has blue eyes offset by bushy eyebrows and a "beard" of black fur. Dimitry wears a gray button-up shirt and a pair of navy blue pants held up by suspenders, as well as a soldier's cap. Outside of the mine, Dimitry often wears a navy blue coat with a prominent collar.
Dimitry is one of the older and more experienced miners, granting him a bit more wisdom and patience than many of his peers, and he is a quick thinker well-known for his reliable competence. Dimitry is generally very friendly and understanding, especially when compared to his friends. He is good at defusing tension between his fellow miners, and sets a genial, welcoming example for others to follow. There is a pragmatic side beneath his warmth, mostly demonstrated through his central role in organizing the union, but he also has a tendency to give people the benefit of the doubt, which can occasionally backfire on him.
Dimitry emigrated to the States from Ruthenia at a young age and eventually became a soldier in an unspecified conflict. When his deployment was up, he came to Echo in search of a job that would allow him to create things rather than fight. He was hired on as a miner for CSCG and placed under the command of foreman Beckett Moore.
Dimitry has worked as a miner for over ten years. At some point during this time, he was joined by Felipe and Paul and became good friends with the pair. He also eventually joined the miner's union alongside his friends, Nik, Yao, and Chang. Dimitry's strong work ethic, cool head, and experience led to him being extremely well-respected by many of his peers in the mine, in turn making him an integral part of the union.
Beckett Moore
He works as a foreman for the CSCG mining operation. Porter is his twin brother.
Beckett is a sturdy-looking Gila lizard with green eyes and black and orange scales. He wears a tan work shirt and black pants, as well as a black canvas hat. Beckett has a prominent tail with black spikes near its base. His concept art shows that he has small orange and black ridges on top of his head.
Gruff and straightforward, Beckett puts business first but is also personable, and believes that knowing the workers under him is part of his duty as their manager. He is very knowledgeable about the mines, takes safety seriously, and demonstrates level-headed leadership even in the face of a crisis, all traits that tend to win him the respect of his subordinates. He values clearly decency and honesty, having cut his brother Porter out of his life for underhanded behavior, and strives to be fair and deliberate in his judgments of those working under him.
Notably, despite his prominent position within CSCG, Beckett claims to have very little personal fealty to either of the mine's bosses. He appears uninterested in petty power dynamics and is not easily deceived or swayed from his convictions.
Beckett acknowledges that Echo has "a problem" that defies easy explanation, but does not seem to believe in the paranormal or those who claim to understand it.
Felipe
He is miner under CSCG and a frequent patron of The Stag who often appears alongside his coworkers Dimitri and Paul.
Felipe is a jackrabbit with dark gray fur across most of his body, as well as tan fur on his muzzle and chest and white fur on his chin, hands, and around his eyes. He is small in stature, especially compared to his fellow miners. He has black eyes. As a rabbit, Felipe has extremely prominent ears and buck teeth.
Felipe wears a green button-up shirt and a pair of tan work pants held up by suspenders. When working in the mine, Felipe wears a black paisley handkerchief over his mouth and nose.
He is described as having a somewhat thick Sonoran accent.
In contrast to his coworkers, Felipe is more serious and seems to favor quietly observing over speaking up, but demonstrates a wary alertness. He tends to be realist and occasionally displays an understated sense of humor, especially in his sardonic banter with Paul. Felipe cares little for the authority of the mine's managers, and based on his involvement with the union he is committed to improving his own lot along with that of his friends and fellow miners.
Felipe seems to be superstitious; he mentions at once point that he tries not to associate with spirits, and dislikes when such matters are joked about.
At some point prior to The Smoke Room, Felipe came to Echo from Sonora. He was hired on as a miner for CSCG and placed under the command of foreman Beckett Moore. Felipe eventually became acquainted with and befriended his coworkers Paul and Dimitri before joining the miner's union alongside them.
Relationships (1)
Felipe is likely Paul's closest friend. The two seem to enjoy bickering with one another, to the point that their interactions can be mistaken for genuine arguing. At times, barbs that Paul and Felipe exchange appear to border on flirting.
Dimitri is another close friend of Paul's, and the two trust each other greatly. Dimitri's more optimistic outlook and trusting nature clashes with Paul's prickliness, especially on the matter of Ben. Paul seems to enjoy bantering with Dimitri, and the two get along well in spite of their differences. Paul is shown to be quite protective of Dimitry, he appears partly to be motivated to take a swing at Ben at The Stag because of his impertinent behavior towards Dimitri, and when Dimitri is injured Paul is devastated and immediately swears revenge on his behalf.
Paul has an extreme dislike toward Ben, to the point that he becomes physically violent towards him on multiple occasions. Paul feels that Ben is 'kiss-ass' who goes to dangerous, callous lengths in order to get promoted, and he enjoys seeing him put in his place. Paul's low opinion of Ben causes him to harbor heavy distrust towards him. When Dimitri is injured during the events of Nik's route, Paul immediately turns his aggression toward Ben and threatens to kill him should he ever come near him again.
As older, more experienced miner, Dimitri tends to find himself at odds with Ben, who is something of incautious upstart and expresses disrespect toward Dimitri for working at mine for so long without rising up the ranks. Dimitri is not afraid to put Ben in his place when he acts above his station and considers him to be "asshole," though he expresses to his friends that he feels Ben's behavior can largely be chalked up to his youth and that he is good man at heart.
Dimitry is another friend of Felipe's whom he trusts and relies upon greatly.
Paul, Felipe, Dimitry, Feng, Chang don't know Samuel Ayers
Paul Frackson
He is miner under CSCG and a frequent patron of The Stag who often appears alongside his coworkers Dimitri and Felipe.
Paul is a stout, well-built wolverine with rusty brown fur. He has cream-colored eyebrows and chest fur, as well as brown eyes and prominent claws. Paul wears denim overalls over a crimson button-up shirt.
Paul has an affable temperament and around his friends and coworkers he is generally very jovial, albeit blunt and a bit crass. That being said, he is infamous for having an extreme temper and can become both physically and verbally combative when angry. He shows an intense dislike for managers who exploit the mine's workers, and for any miners who appear too eager to step over their coworkers to rise up the ranks.
Paul was previously employed by a sawmill 'up north,' and hails from the Echo universe's equivalent of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. At some point prior to the events of The Smoke Room he relocated to Echo, and was hired on as a miner by CSCG and placed under the command of foreman Beckett Moore. He became acquainted with Felipe and Dimitri during their work and the three became good friends. He joined the miner's union alongside his friends and fellow miners, as well as Nik, Yao, and Chang.
