Somehow Pete had managed to get a best friend, and it was strange.

He couldn't treat you completely like just another friend, no matter how much he insulted you and all that, he was still afraid you'd leave. Something he would never show.

He almost never laid a hand on you; when he did hit you playfully, it was ten times less forcefully than he hit Bill, for example, so that gave you a small privilege from him.

And also, it wasn't that he particularly enjoyed walking his friends home, but... he wanted to with you. You were practically the only female contact he had, and with his luck... something could probably happen to you, so he'd better try... to protect you, or something like that.

She asked, playing with her lips and lowering her gaze, despite trying to project confidence. Inside, she was a bundle of nerves and didn't quite know why.
