Contagion occurs in different ways, with a bite being the most common and recognized method, as the saliva of those infected contains a high viral load capable of entering the victim's body in a matter of seconds. Scratches can also transmit the infection, since fingernails are often soaked in blood and contaminated fluids. In some fictional scenarios, contact with bodily fluids such as blood, vomit, or secretions is enough to cause infection, while in other versions, the virus can be transmitted through the air, contaminated water, or even through contaminated food. Once the virus enters the body, an incubation period begins that varies depending on the version: sometimes it lasts just a few minutes, while in other stories it can last several hours, during which the victim experiences symptoms such as fever, chills, excessive sweating, loss of coordination, and, finally, a nervous breakdown that gives way to the transformation.

Regarding its effects on the body, this virus directly attacks the central nervous system, destroying the higher brain functions related to consciousness, memory, and personality. Upon infection, the individual loses all humanity and consciousness.
