Gameplay

Gameplay
The player controls the SOUL using the arrow keys or the left stick on the controller if equipped. In the action menu, the SOUL is used to indicate the selected action option.

During battle, when a monster attacks, the player moves their SOUL to dodge the attack. If the player is attacked outside of battle (such as colored lasers or Undyne's spears), then when the player encounters danger, a battle window appears where their SOUL is attacked, removing HP when it is hit.

If the player's HP drops to zero, their SOUL splits into two and shatters, causing a game over window to appear.

However, in the final battle with Asriel Dreemurr, the protagonist's determination restores SOUL and HP if the mark reaches zero.

SOUL of a monster
The SOUL of any monster is always white, which can be seen when Asriel releases all the monster SOULs he has absorbed (and destroys the barrier) or when the player kills Toriel and Asgore, as well as during the fight with Mettaton when he shows his "heart".

A monster's SOUL is weak and does not persist after death, with the exception of boss monsters. Monsters believe their SOULs are made up of love, hope, and compassion.

The game's backstory clearly points to two things:

The SOULS of boss monsters continue to exist for some time after death[1].
Children of boss monsters grow up because the SOUL power of the parents enters the child[2].
When a boss monster dies, its body turns to dust; however, its SOUL, in the shape of an upside-down heart, remains for a few moments before disappearing. Just like other monsters' SOULs, boss monsters' SOULs are white.

There are at least three known boss monsters: Toriel, Asgore, and their son, Asriel. Despite the true characteristics of boss monsters, three of them have several of their own characteristics, namely: resemblance to goats and dragons, long drooping ears, visible teeth, a pair of horns, anthropomorphic bodies, and paws with claws at the ends of their limbs. All currently known boss monsters have veins.

Ruins. Made of purple stone or brick. Sometimes there are white columns and stairs. Green vines can often be seen on the walls. Small ditches flow out from under the walls, with wooden bridges leading across them. Red fallen leaves are scattered on the ground.
Snowdin. The town is covered in a permanent layer of ice and snow, which is how it got its name. A cheerful Christmas atmosphere prevails here, which is complemented by cheerful music. A tunnel runs through the town, which leads to two entrances that look like igloos. In the middle of Snowdin stands a Christmas tree.
Snowdin Forest. In this location, you can find snow-covered coniferous trees and snow fields. The territory is similar to the taiga. In the north, there is a huge river that flows to the east.
Waterfall. A dark or dimly lit area where blue and black tones predominate. Black and dark blue cave rocks are everywhere here, dotted with multi-colored gemstones. Swamps with very dark water and waterfalls are common.
Hotland: An arid region built on red-orange rock that rises above lava.

Locations

Home is the first monster town founded in the Underdark after the war, when the monsters were trapped behind a barrier. Home was later abandoned and the monsters moved to New Home.[1] Home can be seen from a room at the end of the Ruins. The town is inaccessible to the protagonist, but a nearby Froggit mentions that Toriel was last seen bringing ingredients from there to make a cinnamon toffee pie.

A toy knife can be found on the balcony overlooking the House.

Interesting facts
The house is mentioned on an ancient tablet in the Crystal Labyrinth room in Waterfall.[2] This means that monsters were once able to freely enter and exit the Ruin Capital.
However, the exit from the Ruins can only be opened from the inside. If the door is closed, it is said that only a ghost or someone who can burrow into the ground can freely enter and exit the area.[3][4]
The House is featured as a dynamic theme for the PS4 version of Undertale, titled "Ruins". Unlike how the House appears in-game, it features the blue stars of the Waterfall shining overhead, and Deltarune singing "Before the Story Begins" by Toby Fox.[5][6]

Living room (1)
The eastern path leads to the living room, where Toriel can be found sitting in a comfortable reading chair by a small fireplace. There is a bookcase nearby, sharpened tools, a large dining table with three chairs, and an entrance to the kitchen. If you examine the bookcase, you can find a history book about the monsters that went into the Ruins.

If the protagonist returns to this room after killing Toriel, the fire will go out.

We walked further and further into the earth until we reached the end of the cave.

Kitchen (2)
The room contains a refrigerator with a signature chocolate bar inside, a sink with a white fur stuck in the drain, a kitchen island with a cabinet full of cookie cutters[1] and butterscotch pie, hanging pots and oven mitts, and an oven with a clean hob.[2]

When testing the Toffee Cinnamon Pie, different dialogs appear in different cases:

If the main character does not sleep in bed, it means he is too hot.
If they were sleeping, then, as the author notes, the size of the pie frightens the protagonist.
On the Genocide route, checking the kitchen cabinet results in the unique line: "Where are the knives." Checking the oven after killing Toriel results in the line: "No one will use this again..."

Corridor (3)
To the right of the entrance to Toriel's House is a short hallway that leads to the guest rooms and Toriel's room, as well as various plants, including two plants that the protagonist does not know the names of.[3] At the end of the hallway, a box containing flower seeds and broken crayons can be found, as well as a door with the inscription "Room under renovation". If you open it, you will not be able to enter it. Next to the door is a mirror that, when examined in Neutral or True Pacifist mode, will display the text: "It's you!"

After reading the encyclopedia, there are two vases with plants in Toriel's room.

Snowdin Forest is the second region the protagonist encounters in the Underdark. It appears after the protagonist defeats Toriel and receives guidance from Flowey in the Ruins.
Functions
For puzzles in this area, see Snowdin/Puzzles.
The city is home to the Snow Troop, which consists of the Royal Guard, presumably because the city is located near the entrance to the Dungeon, where humans can enter.
There are many locations here, such as Snowdin's Shop, the Snowy Inn, Snowdin's Library, Grillby's, and Papyrus and Sans's House.
A decorated Christmas tree in the town centre with presents from 'Santa' for the residents of Snowdin.
The protagonist can see the Ice Wolf throwing ice into the river, from where it falls into the waterfall and into the CORE.
Main story
Neutral route
After solving the puzzles created by Papyrus and Sans in Snowdin Forest, the protagonist goes through the town of Snowdin and engages in battle with Papyrus. If the protagonist is defeated, Papyrus places them in his barn. After defeating Papyrus, the protagonist can travel from Snowdin to Waterfall, the next main location in the game.

Genocide route
When the protagonist kills everyone in Snowdin Forest, Snowdin Town and its buildings are completely empty, except for the Monster Child, who believes that Undyne will protect them. The shop has a note that says "Please do not harm my family," and the innkeeper's child is replaced by a mannequin. Knocking on the door in the north of Snowdin results in no answer, and the ice wolf no longer throws ice. When the protagonist encounters Papyrus, he notices a strange

Papyrus and Sans's House is a location in Snowdin. The house is decorated with Christmas decorations and becomes accessible after the protagonist befriends Papyrus. To the left of the house is Sans's mailbox, full of junk mail, and Papyrus's empty mailbox.

After you befriend Undyne, she can be seen in front of this house with Papyrus.
Genocide route
During their first meeting, Sans notices that the protagonist does not respond to his joke.[3] The protagonist also completes Papyrus' puzzles, much to his displeasure.[4] Sans attempts to redirect the protagonist,[5] but ultimately threatens him and warns him of what will happen if he continues on his genocidal path.[6]

Geography
Coniferous trees, snow fields, and small cave systems populate the Snowdin Forest, and the region is similar in many ways to the Taiga biome. There is also a large river that flows east; the Ice Wolf uses this river to transport ice to the CORE. Snow covers the ground in Snowdin Forest and Snowdin Town.

The first room of Snowdin Forest is long and horizontal, with coniferous trees creating a constant backdrop. As the protagonist walks to the right, the coniferous trees obscure the foreground, allowing Sans to appear as a silhouette between them as he follows the protagonist. A sturdy branch blocks part of the path, and as the protagonist passes by it, the branch splits.[7] After his introduction, Sans tells the protagonist that his brother built a wooden bridge.[8] After the protagonist crosses the bridge, he hides behind a conveniently shaped lamp that sits next to a post

Grillby's is one of the many buildings in Snowdin, located to the left of the Snowdin Library and Papyrus and Sans's house.

Grillby's has a few booths, tables, a bar, and a broken jukebox. As mentioned above, there are a variety of NPCs to meet, from Chatterbox to Punk Hamster, including the Snow Squad if the protagonist spares them before reaching Snowy.

Interesting facts
Artwork concept by Grillby
Concept art for Grillby and the protagonist's meeting with Sans

Papyrus states that Sans usually eats out every night and has only recently started cooking. It can be assumed that "eating out" is what Papyrus was talking about.
To the left of the bar is a "fire exit" that cannot be used because the protagonist is "not made of fire." This restriction implies that the exit was only made for the owner, Grillby. This joke is a play on real-life fire exits.
The presence of the Little Dog is supposed to prevent the protagonist from reaching the fire escape. However, it is possible to sneak past the Little Dog and reach the fire escape without killing it.[1]
Grillby is either mute, speaks a different language than the other monsters, or is simply taciturn. This is made clear after the True Pacifist ending, when the Red Bird, who usually speaks for Grillby, says "I may not be translating for Grillby anymore... and that's okay, because I was just making up what he was saying." However, when addressing Grillby, he says "................... good job."

In the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita versions, the Dog Shrine is simply a shrine to Trouble Dog, to which the protagonist can donate GOLD.
In the Nintendo Switch version, the shrine is destroyed and behind a red and blue door that matches the colors of the Switch's Joy-Con is Mad Mew Mew, a unique mini-boss.
In the Xbox version, the Temple of Dogs is transformed into the Casino of Dogs and includes a slot machine to earn new "coins" and a donation box that can again be used to upgrade it by investing up to 500 coins.
Main story
When you first open the door to the shrine, you see a dog gnawing on one of Papyrus' bones, and Papyrus shoos it away. Shortly after, Sans opens his door and plays background music on his trombone, which irritates Papyrus.

In the PlayStation versions, the protagonist can donate GOLD to the temple, 1 GOLD at a time. It takes 350 GOLD to fully upgrade the temple.

Undyne's House Interior
Undyne's house looks like a giant angry fish with the door as its mouth and the windows as its eyes. After completing the events in this area, the house turns completely black, with flames shooting out of the windows and the slightly open door. The "eyes" also change their expression from angry to teary. The mad mannequin appears here after their battle, unless it was killed during the Genocide playthrough.

Inside the house is a kitchen with a table, chair, refrigerator that keeps food warm, sword, piano, and a window on the left side of the house. The only other door in this room besides the front door is a locked door that leads to Undyne's room.

After being chased by Undyne across a long bridge in Waterfall, the protagonist is cornered. Undyne attempts to kill them by collapsing the bridge, but they fall down and lose consciousness. While unconscious, they remember Asriel's voice calling out to the fallen man. The protagonist wakes up on a bed of Golden Flowers.

The protagonist's actions up to this point have angered the Mad Dummy so much that he has turned into the Happy Dummy, and his ghost has become part of his body. Napstablook does not interfere in this fight, and the Dummy must be killed to complete the genocide route.

Geography
The Garbage Dump is an area at the base of the Falls that is littered with trash. Like the rest of the Falls, it has dark blue water and purple walls, but there are also colorful piles of trash. There is also one tangle of golden flowers.

Interesting facts
Multiple inspections of the trash heaps will produce different messages, just like the snowflakes in the Snow Forest.
All the trash piles look the same because Woshua has stacked them in neat, separate piles.[1]
