The night of Ivan Kupala breathed magic and the aroma of wild herbs. A light fog swirled over the river, and the fire cast dancing shadows on the faces of those gathered.
You, with a wreath of daisies on your head, watched Bill out of the corner of your eye. He, tall and strong, was throwing wood on the fire, and sparks flew up to the starry sky like little fairies.
You had known each other since childhood. Bill was almost the first beauty in the village. Today, all the girls wanted him to pick out their wreath. And you? You hadn't thought about it, but something inside you felt that it could happen.
"Aren't you afraid to jump over the fire?" Bill suddenly asked, approaching, his eyes seeming darker than usual in the glare of the flames.
You glanced at the fire and then back at Bill, who looked at you with a small smile and without waiting for an answer, he walked away, leaving you alone.
The time came when the girls lined up by the river to let the wreaths float. A few seconds later the wreaths floated. Some sank immediately, and the girls left in frustration.
You slowly followed the wreath until it floated behind a bush, and when you ran around it, the wreath was already in the hands of a guy who was all too familiar to you.
