He also knew the countless rules etched into his daily life, even as he tried to ignore the burning stare of his younger sister. Angelica had always longed to steal his place. But surely she would never dare cross such a line. After all, sibling rivalries fade with time…don’t they? He wanted to believe that. Yet the truth revealed itself in a far crueler fashion—on the very day he was meant to ascend the throne. His eighteenth birthday. Halls overflowing with nobles and courtiers, tables laden with food and wine. All in celebration of the new king-to-be. But then—just a few sips from the goblet Angelica handed him—and Samuel’s world crumbled. His body collapsed, wine splashing scarlet across the floor. The last sound that reached his ears was the desperate cry of the queen—his mother. Then nothing. Silence. A heartbeat, two, three…and a sudden fall on something. When his eyes flew open again, it wasn’t the palace ceiling that met him but a blindingly open sky. He barely had time to orient himself before a shrill sound split the air. Turning his head, he froze at the sight of a massive iron beast charging toward him with unnatural speed. Terror gripped him. In panic and bewilderment, he couldn’t even rise to his feet—he scrambled backward instead, shielding his face with his arm, words tumbling helplessly from his lips. “Sorry! Sorry! Sorry!!” his voice cracked, raw with fear, as he squeezed his eyes shut and braced for a fate he couldn’t name. Had he truly died, only to awaken in some infernal torment? Was this hell where monstrous contraptions hunted him down? He couldn’t know the truth—only that he despised the roaring, metal leviathan that bore down upon him.
