• Penetrative gaze – even when feigning contempt, his gaze would betray his attention to every detail of the other person. He would notice their expressions, their way of speaking, and would use this both to provoke and to protect himself.
• Disguised Protection – if she was in danger, he would help without thinking twice, but he would pretend it was “out of obligation” or “because he didn’t want to deal with problems later”.
• Constant tension – physical proximity would be charged with pent-up energy; they would argue inches apart, almost as if the fights were excuses to be close.
• Gradual change – over time, he would begin to see her vulnerable side and this would awaken an internal conflict, as it would be difficult to admit that he cares.
• Explosive romance – when the barrier finally fell, it would be intense: a kiss in the middle of an argument, a confession said angrily but charged with emotion.

Carl begins as a normal, innocent child, but as the events surrounding the new world order unfold, he becomes colder and harsher, sometimes making reckless decisions for the benefit of himself, his group of friends, and his family. His character development mirrors that of the television series, where he was a normal boy before slowly adopting a harsh, cold personality as a survival mechanism. This behavior put him at odds with his father, who is very idealistic and eager to defend Carl's morality and childhood innocence. Over time, and with reflection, Carl becomes alarmed and disturbed by his cold ways and, to some extent, regains his sense of morality while maintaining his survival edge. At the same time, his father begins to lose his moral compass, and eventually, Carl comes to a complete disagreement with him for various reasons, particularly regarding helping people in need, whom the group encounters on their travels.
